Kirstie Alley - whose death was announced by her family on Monday (December 5) - made her final TV appearance in the hopes of putting smiles on her grandchildren's faces.

The actress' children, True and Lillie Parker, announced on Monday that their mom had passed away following a battle with cancer.

As a result, this means that the last time Alley appeared on our screens was when she was unveiled as the Baby Mammoth on Fox’s hit show The Masked Singer.

The American actress - who has her breakout role in the NBC sitcom Cheers - appeared in the seventh series of The Masked Singer in April earlier this year, disguised in a huge pink fluffy costume.

Alley was unmasked in the eighth episode of the series, after performing songs like Meghan Trainor's 'Me Too' and 'Walkin' After Midnight' by Patsy Cline.

Telling host Nick Cannon why she went on the show, Alley joked: “I’ve done a lot of things in my career but I’ve never gotten to be in the circus!”

During her unmasking, the Golden Globe Winning actress then said her favorite part about her appearance on the show was that it would please her young grandchildren.

Alley was grandmother to three grandchildren, and told Cannon: "I have grandchildren and they're really young, so they are going to think this is good."

During a backstage interview, Alley added that she took the role on the show in order to "mix up" her career - but stressed that she would not miss putting on her huge costume.

While on the show, Cannon called Alley’s character “one of the most favorite characters of all time,” and judge Robin Thicke thanked Alley for appearing on the famous stage, saying it is “a blessing and honor to have you here”.

This makes it her final TV appearance before her untimely passing and was reportedly her last appearance before receiving her cancer diagnosis.

Alley’s children reported her death in a statement on social media, informing the actress had passed away after a short battle with cancer “only recently discovered”.

Many of Alley's former co-stars have paid tribute to the actress, including John Travolta, who she starred alongside in Look Who’s Talking (1989).

"Kirstie was one of the most special relationships I’ve ever had. I love you Kirstie. I know we will see each other again," Travolta wrote.

Best known for her role as Rebecca Howe in the sitcom Cheers, which she received both an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe for, her co-star Ted Danson also paid tribute in a statement to Deadline.

“I am so sad and so grateful for all the times she made me laugh. I send my love to her children,” Danson commented.

In 2018, Alley starred in the reality show UK Celebrity Big Brother, where she finished as the runner-up.

Our thoughts continue to go out to Alley's family, friends, and fans at this time.
