Lil Nas X has hit back at homophobic trolls on Twitter after passionately making out with a dancer at the 2021 BET Awards.

At the end of his performance of his hit song 'Montero (Call Me By Your Name)', the rapper and one of his male dancers shared an intimate make-out session - something which was met with cheers and standing ovations from the audience.

However, not everyone's reaction to the kiss was positive on social media, with one angry Twitter user writing: "Don't use African culture for s***s like this!!!! Respect our ancestors."

The latter comment is a reference to the fact that the rapper was dressed as an Egyptian pharaoh during his performance.

However, Lil Nas was quick to react, writing: "Y'all really like to pretend homosexuality didn't exist in African culture."

The singer went on: "Y'all hate yourselves so much. Y'all live your lives trying your best to appease straight ppl. Y'all are uncomfortable with what I do because y'all are afraid they will be uncomfortable with you.

"Work on yourselves, I love who I am and whatever I decide to do. Get there."

The musician also pointed out that "we are 4 months in" to Montero's release, "and people are still acting surprised that I am being gay and sexual in performances of a song about gay and sexual s*** [sic].

"Like the song is literally about gay sex what y'all want me to do play the piano while baking a cake?"

Lil Nas' clap-back did not go unnoticed by fans, with one writing in response: "As a fellow Black queer person, I'm so f***ing proud of you my dude.

"I see you up on stage, being yourself, feeling yourself, and I cannot express how f***ing grateful I am to see it. I'm proud you're out here, being proud of you. Makes me feel good to be me, too."

Per Independent, 'Montero' is the rapper's second number one track, having achieved the same feat back in 2019 with 'Old Town Road', which spent a record 19 weeks at the top of the US charts.
