Madonna has come under fire after posting a series of controversial pictures on social media.

The 63-year-old 'Like A Prayer' singer shared the snaps to promote her collaboration with photographer Steven Klein and V Magazine.

In the first photo, she can be seen clutching the edition of the magazine while surrounded by candles. However, it was the second image that fans seemed to be outraged by, as Klein could be seen standing with his arm around Madonna.

He was also seen holding a knife to her throat in the image.

For many fans on social media, the photo appeared to glorify violence and subsequently crossed a line.

"Madonna needs to stop!! This photo is disgusting. Supporting knife crime, murder, male control and so much more. This isn't art it's desperation," tweeted one person.

"Is she an idiot, glamorizing a woman being threatened with a knife? With the increase in knife crime worldwide, this is totally irresponsible!" wrote another.

"So, United Nation's 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence starts on November 25 and Madonna (coincidentally) posts a photo of her with a man holding a massive knife at her throat. Did no-one say, hey, this is JUST AN IDEA, but should we not post that picture?" added a third.

As well as the violent photo, Madonna seems to imply in the caption of the post that she did not pay her team for their work on the shoot.

"Thanks to all who did support us and slept on couches and worked long hours and for free all to support madame," she wrote.

Unsurprisingly, this has drawn yet more criticisms from people who can't understand why a multi-millionaire like Madonna is letting her team work for free.

"Why didn't you pay them yourself? Are you short on cash or something?" asked one shocked Instagram user.

"The definition of exploitation = People working for you for free in the name of 'art,'" chimed in another.

This isn't the first time that the singer's V Magazine shoot has faced backlash. In October, the collaboration was called out for 'recreating' Marilyn Monroe's death bed.

Monroe died on August 5 1962 after an apparent drug overdose. Her body was later found in bed at her Los Angeles home - a scene Madonna seemed to be reimagining in her photoshoot with Klein.

"For some morbid and eerie reason, Madonna decides to re-create Marilyn Monroe's death bed," critiqued Senior Executive at NBC Mike Sington.

However, Klein argued that the photos were actually inspired by a shoot that Marilyn Monroe did with photographer Bert Stein titled 'The Last Sitting.'"

"We were not interested in recreating the images exactly but more importantly, we wanted to explore the relationship between photographer and subject," he said per NME.
