Environmental activist Greta Thunberg has become one of the most influential teenagers on Earth. In the space of just a few years, she's kickstarted an entire social movement, been named TIME's Person of the Year for 2019, and nominated twice for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Her political lobbying shows no sign of stopping, and she's been hailed as a hero by many. But it seems as though even Greta looks up to someone, and this week she had the opportunity to meet one of her own personal heroes: Malala Yousafzai.
Watch one of Greta's inspiring speeches in the video below:This week Greta visited Lady Margaret Hall in Oxford, where the 22-year-old Pakistani Nobel Prize laureate studies Philosophy, Politics, and Economics.
Malala uploaded pictures of the meeting to her Instagram account, writing: "Thank you, @gretathunberg ❤️", while Greta tweeted the photos and wrote "So…today I met my role model. What else can I say?’
Malala Yousafzai rose to prominence after she was shot in the head by the Taliban while walking home from school. She survived despite all the odds, and became a tireless feminist campaigner for the education of women in her home country.
Previously, Greta was lucky enough to have the chance to meet Hollywood actor and fellow-environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio, and Leo took to Instagram to applaud Thunberg's campaigning.
Sharing a picture of the pair of them, which he captioned: "There are few times in human history where voices are amplified at such pivotal moments and in such transformational ways – but @GretaThunberg has become a leader of our time."
He continued: "History will judge us for what we do today to help guarantee that future generations can enjoy the same livable planet that we have so clearly taken for granted. I hope that Greta’s message is a wake-up call to world leaders everywhere that the time for inaction is over."
"It is because of Greta, and young activists everywhere that I am optimistic about what the future holds. It was an honor to spend time with Greta. She and I have made a commitment to support one another, in hopes of securing a brighter future for our planet."
