The singer, 55, confirmed in a statement that her mother Patricia, 87, and her sister Alison, 63, had tragically passed away on the same day over the weekend.

She shared her heartbreak in a statement, telling People: "My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend.

"Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day."

Mariah added: "I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed.

"I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time."

No further details about the pair's cause of death have been revealed at this time.

Patricia was mother to daughters Alison and Mariah as well as a son, Morgan, from her marriage to Alfred Roy Carey, who she divorced when the singer was three years old.

Like her Grammy-award-winning daughter, Patricia was also a talented singer, having trained at the prestigious Juilliard as an opera singer and vocal coach.

Mariah and her mother had a complicated relationship throughout the singer's life, as she admitted in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey: "Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It's never been only black-and-white — it's been a whole rainbow of emotions.

"Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment. A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother's."

She also dedicated the book in part to her mother, writing: "And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always."

Mariah also admitted that professional jealousy had come between them at times, which she said "comes with the territory of success, but when the person is your mother and the jealousy is revealed at such a tender age, it’s particularly painful."

Mariah has also been open about her complex relationship with her siblings over the years, writing that at the time of her memoir, it was "emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact" with Alison or Morgan.

Alison also sued Mariah for $1.2million after the release of her memoir, calling it "vindictive" and stating that it caused her "immense emotional distress".

Her father, Alfred, died in 2002 at the age of 72, having battled cancer.

Our thoughts remain with the singer and her family at this heartbreaking time.
