Matthew McConaughey has revealed why he chose not to go into detail after revealing how he was "molested by a man" when he was a teenager.
The Academy Award-winning actor's revelations are featured in his new memoirs, titled Greenlights, which was released last month.
In excerpts of the new book, shared by The Independent, the 50-year-old actor writes that he was "molested by a man when I was 18 while knocked unconscious in the back of a van."
In addition, McConaughey added: "I was blackmailed into having sex for the first time when I was 15. I was certain I was going to hell for the premarital sex.
"Today, I am merely certain that I hope that’s not the case."
Now, during an appearance on the Tamron Hall talk show, the Interstellar star revealed why he chose not to go into more detail regarding the abuse.
McConaughey said: "Ultimately, there’s nothing that I feel is constructive about the details.
"I feel like those details, unless I had a really good constructive way that I saw it that could be relatable to other people, I felt like those details could have just been grabbed and reported for voyeurism.
"They could’ve been the thing that every single show was going to go ‘Read about the details of when Matthew was molested,’ or ‘Read about when he got blackmailed,’ and that’s the wrong headline,”
"I write also in the book I’ve never felt like a victim.
"Those two events happened to me at 15 and 18. If they would’ve happened to me younger, maybe I would’ve been more confused.
"But when they happened to me, it was very clear to me, that they were wrong, that they were not ideal, that they were not how it’s supposed to be."
He added: "So I think having that clarity means that it’s probably why it didn’t stick with me and confuse me later on or left me having a non-realistic view of the way the world is supposed to work."
The actor also revealed how he wrote his memoirs while isolating in desert for 52 days, with no electricity, in order to write the memoir.
McConaughey added that the writing process was aided by the fact he has been keeping a diary for over 36 years.
Promoting his new book as part of a cover story with People, McConaughey admits that his parents had a tumultuous relationship - marrying each other three separate times. But he says that all the bad times were "superseded by the love".
He said: "Look, they were, at times, violent. As I say in the book, that is how they communicated. They were divorced twice, married three times, I mean, yeah, it was like the Pacific Ocean in a storm, you know?
"But as I say in the book, those moments were so quickly - always, 100% of the time - so quickly superseded by the love and the humanity."

Matthew McConaughey has bravely spoken out about the time he was blackmailed into having sex when he was a teenager.
During an episode of Amanda de Cadenet’s The Conversation: About the Men podcast, the 52-year-old actor opened up about the time he was blackmailed into having sex at the age of 15 and revealed another traumatic incident he experienced at 18.
As well as reflecting on his difficult teenage years, McConaughey also spoke about the conversations he had with his dad on the topic of sexual intimacy and consent.
The Wedding Planner actor explained that his father sat him down for a talk on "the birds and the bees," and the importance of having respect for future partners.
The Dallas Buyers Club actor told the podcast host about the incident, saying: "I’m not gonna be afraid of relationships because my first experience was blackmail. Uh-uh. That’s an aberration."
"Am I denying that it happened? No. I’m not denying that it happened. It happened," he said, explaining that he "chose" not to "bring that baggage" into his life.
Elaborating further on the incident, McConaughey said he refused to let the traumatic moment affect his future sexual relationships as a teenager, saying: "I was very clear, again, that was not right, that was not cool, that was not the way it is."
"After that, I got to have some healthy sexual relations and have girls that I liked and liked me, and we slowly got intimate and it was beautiful and clumsy, and all those things, but it wasn’t ugly like that was," he added.
While speaking to de Cadenet, the Interstellar star also recalled how his late father, James McConaughey, taught him about the importance of consent.
"He said, 'Son, as a male in the situation,' - speaking to me about a heterosexual relationship - 'if you ever feel the girl, the female, hesitate, stop,'" McConaughey recalled.
"'You may even feel them hesitate, and then after you stop, they may go, 'oh, no, come on'. Don’t. Wait till next time,'" the actor said, adding, "'Trust you’ll have another day if it is to be.'"
The True Detective actor said that his dad's advice on the importance of sexual intimacy helped him overcome the blackmail experience - something he also reflected on in his memoir Greenlights which was published in 2020.
McConaughey wrote that he was sexually assaulted in a van three years after the blackmail incident and revealed that he didn’t "connect" the two incidents. He insisted that he didn’t have any option other than to get past it.
When asked how he was able to move past his trauma, the actor said: "I don’t have a rocket science answer, it wasn’t an option. I love life too much and believe in life, believe in people. I still go trust-first. I have my spider senses and my sirens."
The academy award-winning actor refused to let his trauma define his relationships with others and has gone on to lead a successful life.
He has three children - Levi Alves McConaughey, 14, Vida Alves McConaughey, 12, and Livingston Alves McConaughey, nine - with his wife Camila Alves.

Matthew McConaughey has spoken out about his strict rules surrounding social media and his children.
In an era when kids are growing up in a digital landscape filled with TikTok dances and Instagram selfies, the Dazed and Confused star is taking a different path when it comes to parenting and social media.
McConaughey, a father of three, has won over parents everywhere by revealing that he and his wife, Camila Alves McConaughey, prohibited their eldest son, Levi, from diving into the world of social media until he turned 15.
While it might seem like an impossible task to keep kids away from social platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat - especially since the minimum age for most of these platforms is only 13 - McConaughey took a measured but steadfast approach.
Discussing his parenting strategy on the Today show with Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush, the actor said, "Oh [Levi] wanted [to be on social media] early on, probably when he was 12, definitely 13. Definitely 14. And we waited till he was 15."
McConaughey didn't make this decision on a whim. He elaborated: "We tried to look at the upfalls and the downfalls. It's not like sending your kid off to college, but it is like sending your kids off with a bunch of strangers into the world." This careful consideration has clearly resonated with other parents - many of whom are aware of the pros and cons that come with introducing children to social media.
After the clip was shared on Instagram, the Oscar winner was heavily praised for his parenting techniques in the comments section, with many other parents agreeing with his methods. One person wrote: "I love that so many celebrities are being good examples about waiting when it comes to phones and social media."
A second added: "I wish this man would come to schools and talk to parents. I taught middle school. I saw the negative impacts social media had in kids. My child had none of it until he was 16."
"I appreciate the example he’s setting delaying social media for his son, and then using discretion what you share," commented a third, "Good parenting!"
"He’s AWESOME for so many reasons, but especially how he loves his family," a fourth IG user wrote.
What set McConaughey's approach apart from an outright ban is the time the actor invested in preparing his son for the online realm. "We spent two years trying to really define what social media is to him," McConaughey said. "Let's talk about what it is.
"Let's talk about the upfalls. Let's talk about the downfalls. Let's talk about the assets. Let's talk about the traps. Let's talk about what you wanna tell."
The actor also touched upon a problem that many young people encounter today: the impact of social media on one's sense of self and purpose. "Because what happens a lot of times with young people and social media is they wake up in the morning and the first thing on their mind is, 'What will be a good post?' instead of, 'What do I want to do today?'" he noted.
Jenna Bush echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of children "living rather than just scrolling."
Yes, despite being a Hollywood megastar and Academy Award winner, celebs like McConaughey face the same parenting challenges we all do!
