Fans of the TV show Friends have paid tribute to the late Matthew Perry with a touching memorial outside the iconic New York City building seen in the sitcom.

Over the weekend, it was confirmed that the beloved actor had passed away at the age of 54.

TMZ and the Los Angeles Times were the first outlets to report that Perry had been found unresponsive in the hot tub of his home in LA.

BBC News has since reported that a post-mortem conducted on Perry yielded inconclusive results, and authorities are currently awaiting toxicology test outcomes. Additionally, no evident signs of trauma were noted, as verified by an LA Police representative to CBS News.

On Sunday, the LA County Medical Examiner's office provided an update, indicating the case was pending further review. Typically, this suggests that while the autopsy has been carried out, additional information is still required.

Following the heartbreaking news, many of Perry's fans have been paying tribute to the late star.

Perhaps best known for his role on the hit US sitcom Friends, Perry gained millions of fans in his role as the hapless joker Chandler Bing.

Starring alongside his five other main castmates - Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer - Perry would earn an Emmy nomination for the role. But most importantly, he became part of TV history, as the show remains as popular now as it was in the 90s.

While some fans have taken to social media to share their favorite Chandler Bing moments, others have taken to New York City to gather at the iconic Greenwich Village building that featured in the show as Monica, Chandler, and Joey's apartment.

Located on Bedford Street, a collection of flowers, cards, and candles has now created an impromptu memorial for the late star.

Images circulating on social media show a number of poignant messages that have been left behind in cards. "We will never understand what Chandler's job was, but we will know how much joy being in his company brought us," one fan wrote in a message.

Another sign simply read: "The one where we all lost a friend" - a reference to the show's playful episode titles.

Friends aired on NBC for ten seasons between 1994 and 2004.

The show told the story of six 20-something-year-olds trying to navigate life, work, and relationships in New York City.

Due to the global success of the show, Perry and his cast mates became international household names.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Perry's "heartbroken" family have since issued the following statement, remembering Perry: "We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother.

"Matthew brought so much joy to the world, both as an actor and a friend. You all meant so much to him and we appreciate the tremendous outpouring of love."

Perry's blended family consisted of his mom - Suzanne Morrison - and dad - actor John Bennett Perry - as well as his two step-parents and five step-siblings.
