Matthew Perry has revealed the staggering amount he spent trying to get sober.
The 53-year-old Friends alum took part in a recent interview with The New York Times while promoting his forthcoming memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.
"I've probably spent $9 million or something trying to get sober," the actor stated, before going on to share that he recently celebrated 18 months of sobriety.
Perry was newly sober around the time the Friends reunion special was filmed. The highly-anticipated program aired in May 2021.
Per Celebrity Net Worth, Perry's net worth comes in at $120 million. He made $22,500 an episode on the first season of Friends, with his earnings rising to an eye-watering $1 million an episode for the final two seasons of the hit NBC sitcom.
This comes some days after he opened up about almost dying from an opioid addiction, with his reliance on drugs and alcohol leaving him with a 2% chance of survival after opioids caused his colon to burst and rendered him comatose for two weeks.
Anyone who wants to hear more about his sobriety journey will be able to do just that when his sit-down interview with ABC News' Diane Sawyer airs on Friday, October 28, at 8:00PM EST on ABC. It will be available to stream on Hulu the following day.
In a trailer for the upcoming interview, Perry shared that his Friends co-star Jennifer Aniston confronted him about his excessive drinking and told him that she and the rest of the cast were aware of his alcohol consumption.
He also revealed that Aniston showed the most support while he sought help for his addiction. "[Aniston] was the one that reached out the most," he revealed. "I'm really grateful to her for that."
Speaking to People, Perry revealed that due to his heavy drugs and alcohol consumption, he had to undergo 14 surgeries on his stomach and had to use a colostomy bag for nine months. He also shared that his stomach has a number of scars from the surgeries.
A therapist informed him he may have to use a colostomy bag for the rest of his life if he starts using drugs again.
Perry did not say when it was that he got sober but said he is "pretty healthy" now and chooses to "count each day."
The actor also revealed he went to rehab 15 times, with his first stint in 1997 and then again in 2001 and in 2011.
