Mayor bans Chappell Roan from Rio festival in scathing statement after Jude Law's daughter left 'in tears'
Chappell Roan is facing backlash in Brazil after Rio de Janeiro’s mayor announced she is not welcome at one of the city’s biggest music events. The decision comes after soccer star Jorginho Frello accused the singer’s security team of making his 11-year-old stepdaughter cry during a hotel encounter.
The situation has sparked heated reactions online, with Frello sharing his claims publicly and Roan later responding with her own version of events. The dispute centers around an interaction in São Paulo, where the singer is currently in town for Lollapalooza Brazil.
Rio Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere weighed in on Saturday, making it clear that Roan, 28, would not be invited to perform at Todo Mundo no Rio while he remains in office.
The event is a major series of free concerts held on Copacabana Beach and has previously featured stars like Madonna and Lady Gaga, with Shakira set to headline in May.
Mayor speaks out and backs family
Cavaliere publicly addressed the situation on X, writing, “I mean that as long as I’m in charge of our city — this young lady @ChappellRoan will never perform at Todo Mundo no Rio! I doubt that Shakira would do that!”
He also showed support for Frello’s stepdaughter, adding, “By the way, [Frello], your little one is already the guest of honor from the organization in May!”
The comments came after Frello claimed his stepdaughter Ada, whose father is actor Jude Law, and her mother Catherine Harding were confronted at a hotel in São Paulo.
Frello claims daughter left in tears
Frello detailed the encounter on Instagram, explaining how excited Ada had been to see the singer. “My daughter woke up extremely excited, she even made a sign because she was so happy to see an artist she really admires, or used to admire @chappellroan,” he wrote.
He claimed Ada did not approach Roan and was simply passing by when a “large” security guard confronted her and her mother, speaking “in an extremely aggressive manner.”
“My daughter got super scared and cried a lot,” Frello wrote. “Honestly, I don’t know in what world just passing by a table and looking … can be considered harassment.”
He also directed criticism at the singer, writing, “Without your fans you would be nobody. And to the fans, she does not deserve your affection.”
Roan denies interaction took place
Roan later responded in an Instagram video, disputing the claims and stating she was unaware of any interaction.
“I didn’t even see a woman and a child, like, no one came up to me,” she said. “No one bothered me. I was just sitting at breakfast in my hotel. I think these people were staying at the hotel, as well.”
“I did not, [and] they did not come up to me. They weren’t doing anything,” she clarified.
The singer also addressed criticism about her attitude toward fans, adding, “I do not hate children, like, that is crazy.”
