When I woke up this morning, I was pretty sure it was 2018. However, having seen how people are reacting to Meghan Markle literally just closing a car door, I am now convinced that we've all been jettisoned back in time by at least a good few decades.
The (apparently) offensive incident happened yesterday, while the Duchess of Sussex was attending an event at the Royal Academy of Arts. It was the first occasion she'd stepped out to an event without her husband, Prince Harry, and - for the most part - it appears that it all went rather well.
However, there was a minor blip at the beginning of the day when Meghan exited her car. The door was opened for her by a member of her staff, which isn't at all unusual, but then - after she'd stepped out - the former actress did something absolutely outrageous and shut the door behind her *all by herself*.
For most of us, this is nothing worth talking about. In fact, it's not even worth noticing. And yet, the simple action prompted one royal correspondent to tweet a clip of the incident with the caption, "A princess who still takes the time to shut her car door. Well done Meghan."
And, wow, a lot of people had something to say about it.
Some people thought the man who opened the door should've stuck around to close it again.
Others thought that it was a groundbreaking moment in royal history.
A few realised that she was essentially just acting out of habit.
And - I can't believe I'm even writing this - some folks seemed to think it was some sort of divine act of humility.
Guys. She literally just closed a door. I do it every day. You do it every day. We've all been doing this every day for centuries - probably millennia (sorry, I'm not clued up on the history of doors) - and yet everyone is reacting as if she just invented the concept of pushing something a little bit.
Even an etiquette expert weighed in on the matter to reassure people that the duchess had not broken protocol.
"Usually, if you are a member of the royal family or a dignitary, you have a member of staff to open and close a car door for you," said William Hanson, adding that this was usually done for safety reasons more than anything else.
But now that Meghan is closing her own car door, what will she dare to do next? Perhaps she'll tie her own shoelaces or pour her own coffee - and we all know that's a slippery slope to putting on her own makeup or brushing her own teeth.
In all seriousness, though, most people realised how ridiculous the whole thing was. Meghan probably closed the door because it's just her instinct to do that. She wasn't acting out of rebellion or humility, and she almost certainly didn't think it would cause such an issue after the fact.
Now can we all just treat her like a normal human being? I'm sure that's what she'd prefer.
