Albus Dumbledore is one of the most famous characters in the world, but Sir Michael Gambon nearly didn't get the role.

Richard Harris portrayed the great wizard in the first two movies, but after he passed away following the Chamber of Secrets, a new actor had to be cast.

When you think of British actors who could faithfully portray Dumbledore, the mind quickly goes to Gambon, Sir Ian McKellen, and the late Sir Christopher Lee.

The two latter actors also had stints portraying wizards, as they took on the roles of Gandalf and Saruman in the Lord of the Rings series.

The role eventually went to Gambon, but it could have all been a bit different if McKellen hadn't turned it down all because of comments made by Harris.

In an interview with the BBC, the 84-year-old icon disclosed that he had once been offered the role of Dumbledore.

In the interview, McKellen confirmed that Harris had once labeled him and a few other actors as "technically brilliant, but passionless."

McKellen vehemently dismissed this critique as "nonsense." Consequently, when the opportunity to join the Harry Potter franchise arose, he opted to decline.

"When he (Harris) died, he played Dumbledore, the wizard. I played the real wizard," McKellen quipped with a touch of expertly delivered shade.

"When they called me up and said would I be interested in being in the Harry Potter films, they wouldn't say what part, I worked out what they were thinking," he explained. "And I couldn't. I couldn't take over the part from an actor who I'd known didn't approve of me."

Initially, some might have found it difficult to fathom how personal differences could lead to such a momentous decision. However, upon reflection, it becomes evident that McKellen's choice was rooted in professionalism and respect.

Knowing that Harris had publicly expressed his disapproval of him, taking on the role would have created an uncomfortable and potentially awkward situation. Especially considering that McKellen had already solidified his presence as Gandalf in two Lord of the Rings films at the time.

McKellen chose to stay in his lane, forging his own legendary path while leaving Harris' legacy untouched. Interestingly, McKellen's resemblance to Dumbledore has often led fans to mistake him for the character. "When I see the posters of Mike Gambon... I think sometimes it is me," McKellen said.

Sadly, Gambon passed away aged 82 yesterday (September 28) and the Wizarding World has flocked to offer their tributes to the man who continued the role of Dumbledore with great distinction.

Rupert Grint, who played Ron Weasley, shared a heartfelt statement to the late actor on his Instagram profile. "So sad to hear about Michael," Grint penned.

"He brought so much warmth and mischief to every day on set. He captivated me as a kid and became a personal role model of mine for finding the fun and eccentricities in life. Sending all my love to his family, Rupert."

Our thoughts continue to be with Gambon's loved ones at this time.
