Earlier this weekend, a video of a Miley Cyrus fan grabbing the singer in Barcelona spread across the internet. The footage showed the 26-year-old making her way through a crowd alongside husband Liam Hemsworth when a man reached out and pulled her hair before kissing her on the cheek. The assailant was soon pushed away by her security team.
The singer was in the country for Primavera Sound Festival, where she performed on the Friday and Saturday. The video soon made headlines, and by Tuesday Cyrus had put out a statement on the incident.
Taking to Twitter, she explained that regardless of what a woman is wearing or how they are acting, it is not acceptable to touch her without consent.
“She can be wearing what she wants. She can be a virgin. She can be sleeping with 5 different people. She can be with her husband. She can be with her girlfriend. She can be naked. She CAN’T be grabbed without her consent,” she tweeted, adding the hashtag '#DontF**WithMyFreedom' - a reference to lyrics from her new song 'Mother's Daughter'.
Along with this message for her followers, she included a clip of a reporter speaking about what had happened, and a segment from The Talk in which the hosts discussed how the singer’s personal space shouldn't have been intruded upon.
In her second tweet, Cyrus screenshotted of some comments from social media users, who suggested that she deserved what she got for how she was dressed, with one user saying that she "dress like a w****". She responded with: “Don’t f*** with my freedom. #stillnotaskingforit".
The singer is also making her way back onto television by starring in one of the latest episodes of Black Mirror, which is out this week.
