Nick Jonas reveals daughter Malti needed to be resuscitated and have blood transfusions after scary medical emergency
Nick Jonas has opened up about the terrifying circumstances surrounding the birth of his daughter, Malti, revealing she had to be resuscitated and receive six blood transfusions after premature birth.
The 33-year-old shares daughter Malti Marie with his wife Priyanka Chopra Jonas, 43, who they welcomed via surrogate in January 2022.
The pair first met in 2017 at the Vanity Fair Oscars party, following a texting relationship which Jonas described to Vogue as "friendly with an eye toward flirtation." They got engaged and later married in December 2018, before becoming parents in 2022.
Appearing on the February 4 episode of Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, the Jonas Brothers star recalled the premature birth, describing it as “intense”.
Jonas explained that they were expecting Malti to arrive months later than she did.
“We were expecting her to arrive in April of the year she was born,” he said. “And we get a call that it’s going to be sooner. So basically, we went into action.”
When they arrived at the hospital, the situation escalated rapidly. “We got to the hospital, and she came out,” Jonas recalled. “She was 1 pound, 11 ounces, and… purple.”
He went on to explain that Malti needed immediate medical attention after being born and praised the NICU medical staff as “angels” who resuscitated her.
The singer shared that because Malti was born during the Covid-19 pandemic, he and Priyanka were restricted in how much time they could spend with her while she remained in intensive care.
The couple ended up doing 12-hour shifts at the hospital for more than three months as their daughter fought to survive.
He also admitted the experience has stayed with him long after leaving the hospital.
“I could still sort of like, smell it, you know — there’s always visceral things,” he recalls. “It was both comforting and frightening to be there every day and to see other families going through similar situations.”
The singer described Malti’s early months as a daily fight, saying she “fought every day” while spending three and a half months in the hospital, where she slowly gained weight and received six blood transfusions.
He shared that she is now “doing great,” and that they were finally able to take her home “after three and a half months.”
He went on to say that “every day is a gift,” explaining that her strength is made visible in how she approaches the world with excitement.
