The origin story of Kim Kardashian is known to even the biggest Kardashian-Jenner naysayer. Kim shot to fame in 2007 after a sex tape made by herself and her ex-boyfriend Ray J was leaked, and the tape, which was distributed by Vivid Entertainment, is almost wholly responsible for Kim's celebrity, and the procurement of the family's reality television show, Keeping Up With The Kardashians.
Flash forward ten years and Kim is known as an author, a beauty mogul, and for her business smarts. As such, the 37-year-old was understandably hesitant to respond to her daughter, North West, when she asked her why she's famous.
During an appearance on the Big Boys Neighbourhood radio show yesterday, Kim revealed that she finally had to have a conversation with her oldest child about why she's famous, and she dodged the question as hard as humanly possible.
"[North said] 'Mom, why are you famous?'" Kim told the radio hosts. "Oh... okay, I'm gonna have to explain this. And I'm like, 'We have a TV show. We have a TV show.' And she was like 'Oh, okay.' And that was the first time when she was like 'Oh.'"
The real answer is obviously a sex tape, but a five-year-old doesn't need to know that. And while that infamous tape certainly catapulted Kim into the spotlight, it's not responsible for keeping her there - that's all on her.
Kim has previously asserted that the tape is one of her biggest regrets in life, despite the fact that it helped launch her career.
"You know, I think that’s how I was definitely introduced to the world," she admitted to Oprah back in 2012. "It was a negative way, so I felt like I really had to work 10 times harder to get people to see the real me. I have to live with the choices I have made. And I can’t dwell on it.”
And in an interview with Rolling Stone, Kim spoke about how she was affected in the first few days following the leak. "I just never thought [the rumors about the tape] were real," she disclosed. "I was on a trip to New York, and I’d landed, and then someone called me – maybe my sister? I didn’t have a Blackberry then… I think I went right to my mom’s house and she was there with me every step of the way. She didn’t call me screaming or call me crying. She was just there. She was like, ‘I don’t know what you want me to do.’ So we went through it."
"There was a period of time when I just stayed home," the mother-of-three continued. "Khloe’s like, ‘I’ve never met someone who’s moved back in with her mother as many times as you.'"
While North will undoubtedly find out about Kim's sex tape eventually, right now it's up to her mother to tell her what she deems appropriate.
