Olivia Wilde has issued a warning about 'bed death' - and why it could spell the end of a relationship.
The actor and director, 42, has been in several public relationships over the years, having married filmmaker and musician Tao Ruspoli when she was just 19, but split after nine years. She went on to marry Jason Sudeikis in 2013, splitting in 2020, after which she dated Harry Styles and Dane DiLiegro, and is currently in a relationship with art dealer Caspar Jopling.
She recently told The Cut about her current relationship with Jopling, explaining: "When you’re with someone who’s not in the entertainment industry or isn’t a public figure, I have a sense of, ‘I want to protect this person as much as I can,'" adding that it is a "lovely relationship".
Wilde is currently promoting her new movie, The Invite, which centers on a couple whose relationship is in a rocky stage, who invite their upstairs neighbors - who have an audibly rampant sex life - to dinner, which opens them up to the prospect of swinging to try and save their relationship.
Wilde appeared on The Louis Theroux podcast during the promo run, where he quizzed her: "What did you conclude about how much sex is normal?"
She candidly responded: "I think my real conclusion is that no sex is not normal, and that is something that I think a lot of people have mis-... Hmm, sounds very judgemental to say misunderstood."
Theroux brought up her previous comments on Call Her Daddy, asking: "You said something like, you feel like actually if there's no sex in the relationship it’s not a good sign," to which Wilde concurred: "It's a bad sign, it’s not a good sign. Yeah, it's a roommate. I really think that."
The director then referred to it as "bed death", clarifying that it's different to a bedroom divorce, which is when a couple sleeps in separate bedrooms.
She admitted: "I don't know, I think that's kind of sexy. I'm intrigued by that. You could, you could invite her over in a way that allows for maybe there's a little bit of mystery in there. I think that's interesting."
Wilde added: "I really learned a lot about how little sex a lot of people are having, and how they assume that's normal… and particularly after children.
"It makes me sad to think about how people have misunderstood intimacy to be about merging identities, and yet not really maintaining a curiosity about this person that allows for the kind of necessary separation that leads to eroticism."
She added: "In our movie, there's a lot of shame in this couple about their lack of sex. They never talk about it. They instead just kind of bicker and subtly resent each other. They're sort of standing on a vibrating volcano of resentment, but they just allow it to come out in little barbs."
Wilde also admitted that she likes the lead-up to the act, explaining: "I do think that there is something kind of tantric about a long lead up to sex that I think that there is a thing that we do when we're dating where we say, 'Let's meet next week, should we have dinner next Thursday?' and it's like, 'Yeah, sure,' and what we're really saying is, like, 'Do you wanna have sex next Thursday?'"

Olivia Wilde has opened up about the moment she got served custody papers from Jason Sudeikis while speaking onstage at CinemaCon.
In April, the 38-year-old director was handed a manila envelope labeled "personal and confidential" while she was introducing the trailer for her upcoming psychological thriller - Don't Worry Darling.
At the time, the 46-year-old Ted Lasso star's representative insisted that he had no prior knowledge that she was going to be served at the convention, adding that Sudeikis "felt a great distress at the manner in which service was made", per Deadline.
However, in a new interview with Variety, Wilde revealed that the incident was not "entirely surprising" to her and that there's a "reason" why she left her former partner.
The House actress labeled the move as a "vicious" attack and went on to say that the incident involved "a huge breach in security, which is really scary".
"The hurdles that you had to jump through to get into that room with several badges, plus special Covid tests that had to be taken days in advance, which gave you wristbands that were necessary to gain access to the event - this was something that required forethought," she added.
She continued that that moment was unfortunate for her two kids - Otis, eight, and Daisy, five - who were involved in a public matter that should have been kept confidential.
According to the Independent, Sudeikis revealed in a prior declaration at court that the server was unable to give Wilde the custody papers at the intended location of Heathrow Airport due to numerous mishaps.
The server then tried to serve her the papers at the Las Vegas hotel where the CinemaCon was being held, and then noticed Wilde at the Warner Brothers Panel and "proceeded to serve the Summons and Petition" papers.
The Booksmart director explained that the "nastiness" of the "sabotage" diverted people from her second directorial effort, which will be released in theaters next month.
The former celebrity couple had been co-parenting their kids since ending their relationship in November 2020, following a seven-year engagement.
Recently this month, a judge ruled in favor of Wilde and declared that her children will reside in California and not New York as the Horrible Bosses actor petitioned in October 2021, according to papers obtained by Page Six.
Wilde - who is currently dating singer and Don’t Worry Darling actor Harry Styles - now splits her time between Los Angeles and the UK.

Olivia Wilde has slammed her ex-husband, fellow actor Jason Sudeikis, after he served her with custody papers during a live event in front of over 4,100 people in April.
The 38-year-old actress had been involved in a bitter custody battle with Sudeikis, 46, with whom she shares two young children. She recently filed documents at the family court to keep their children, aged 8 and 5, based in Los Angeles.
Court filings obtained by the Daily Mail have shown that Wilde, who was at a CinemaCon event to promote her new directorial project in April, accused her former spouse of trying to "embarrass" her in the "most aggressive manner possible."
The former couple got engaged in 2013 after dating for almost two years. When their relationship ended, Wilde reportedly began dating pop sensation Harry Styles after the pair met filming Wilde's upcoming psychological thriller, Don't Worry Darling.
Sudeikis and Wilde had initially been co-parenting after they called their nine-year relationship quits in 2020. However, it appears that the amicable arrangement took a nasty turn after the parents were unable to reach an agreement over where their two children would be permanently raised.
It is then that Sudeikis decided to have Wilde served with custody papers.
The papers, which came in a manila folder with "Private and Confidential" printed on the front, were presented to Wilde in Las Vegas while she was speaking to 4,100 industry professionals about her new film.
While the couple had originally settled on sending their children to school in Los Angeles, Sudeikis decided he wanted to change this arrangement.
Since wrapping filming of AppleTV's Ted Lasso, which required Sudeikis to be in London, the actor expressed a desire to be in New York. Wilde revealed that he wanted the children, Otis and Daisy, to be with him there.
"Jason decided that he wanted to go to New York for the next year while he is not working, and wanted the children to be with him there during this time off," Wilde said in the court filings.
"When I did not agree, since the children have not lived in New York for several years, Jason filed these papers," the actress continued. She argued that the children have spent the past few years living in either LA or London and have even attended schools in both places.
Last week, a judge denied Sudeikis' petition to have his children with him in New York, saying: "This court finds that New York does not have jurisdiction to hear the custody petitions as New York is not the home state of the subject children."
Sudeikis has recently addressed the incident, saying he didn't want to serve Wilde the papers at Styles' residence or at the children's schools and that he had no knowledge of the time and place the documents would be served.
"I understand that the process server had only done her job; however, I deeply regret what happened. Olivia’s talk was an important event for Olivia, both professionally and personally, and I am very, very sorry that the incident marred her special moment," he stated.

Olivia Wilde, 39, has reportedly claimed that her ex-partner Jason Sudeikis, 47, has never paid child support for their two children, despite earning more than her.
Wilde and Sudeikis had dated since 2011, getting engaged in 2013 and sharing two children before ultimately splitting in November 2020.
Apparently, Wilde has formally requested that Sudeikis start paying her child support for their kids - Otis and Daisy - as she's allegedly been responsible for 100 percent of the costs of raising them.
In recent legal documents obtained by The Blast, Wilde claims that Sudeikis has not contributed to the raising of Otis and Daisy since he split with Wilde three years ago.
"Jason is not currently paying child support to me, despite my requests through counsel that we agree upon an interim support amount to avoid further litigation in this matter," Wilde says in the documents. She also added that she and Sudeikis share "certain expenses for the children," like their school tuition fees.
However, Wilde apparently pays for everything else while the children are in her care, "including, but not limited to, their food, clothing, childcare, extracurricular activities, and transportation costs."
The two actors called off their engagement in 2020, around the time Wilde had started work on filming her psychological thriller Don't Worry Darling, which is set in the 1950s and stars Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Chris Pine, and Gemma Chan.
Pop culture aficionados will recall that this flick had its own set of dramas - with Wilde reportedly feuding with Pugh over the former's growing romance with Styles. Wilde vehemently denied that she had cheated on Sudeikis in the October 2022 issue of Vanity Fair, stating: "Our relationship was over long before I met Harry. Like any relationship that ends, it didn't end overnight.
"Unfortunately, Jason and I had a very bumpy road, and we officially dissolved the relationship towards the beginning of the pandemic. We were raising two kids during lockdown, so we co-parented through that time. Once it became clear that cohabitating was no longer beneficial for the children, it became the responsible thing to NOT, because we could be better parents as friends who lived in different houses," she added.
Gossip about a feud between her and Wilde came to a head when a leaked video showed Wilde pleading with actor Shia LaBeouf not to quit Don't Worry Darling (in which he was meant to star). The leaked footage came after the 39-year-old director claimed she had fired LaBeouf from the set of the flick in 2020 for safety reasons - meaning she'd likely been caught out in a lie.
That announcement in 2020 was certainly timely, given that LaBeouf was receiving negative publicity stemming from accusations of sexual battery and assault from his former girlfriend, FKA Twigs - that case is set to go to trial at the end of this year.
As for Styles and Wilde, they broke up after close to two years together, with the former One Directioner recently being papped playing tonsil tennis with model and author Emily Ratajkowski.

Emily Ratajkowski has finally addressed that viral kiss between herself and Harry Styles in Tokyo last month.
The 31-year-old model and podcast host - who found herself single last year after splitting from husband Sebastian Bear-McClard - has been open about her dating journey and single life.
Previously being linked to Pete Davidson and Eric Andre, just last month Ratajkowski was filmed kissing Styles, 29, in Japan.
The former One Directioner is recently single following his split from actress and director Olivia Wilde (after almost two years together), who herself is in the midst of a custody dispute with ex-fiancé Jason Sudeikis over their two children.
Ratajkowski touched upon the kiss in a recent interview with Vogue Spain, where she admitted she was shocked when the kiss went as viral as it did.
"I didn't expect this to happen but I think, in general, there's a reason certain celebrities live in LA, hire security, don't go to public restaurants, etc," she said, per a translation.
The mother-of-one was also asked whether there was any subsequent drama between herself and Wilde following the leaked video - at which point Ratajkowski referenced the public reaction to Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine's cheating scandal last year.
"These approaches occur over and over again. I did a TikTok talking about it when the Adam Levine case came to light. All my algorithm[s] on this social network showed content focused on slut-shaming a 23-year-old girl," the My Body author noted, referring to the intense online trolling experienced by the young woman who had the alleged affair with father-of-three Levine - who didn't appear to receive half as much public vitriol.
"I was frustrated with the way in which an attack narrative was being established on this girl, instead of asking what happens to the person who is in a relationship and as such has contracted obligations. In the case you ask[ed] me about, it's more of the same. I feel bad for Olivia, because she has had to suffer this situation on several occasions," the model continued.
The actress shares two-year-old son Sylvester Apollo Bear with her ex-husband Sebastian Bear-McClard.

Olivia Wilde was served child custody papers from ex-fiancée Jason Sudeikis whilst delivering a presentation at CinemaCon.
On Tuesday, the 38-year-old actor and director was promoting her new film - titled Don't Worry Darling - when she was handed an envelope marked "private and confidential" in the middle of her speech.
Wilde asked at the time: "Is this for me? Is this a script? Ok got it. Thank you." She then scanned the documents before resuming her speech.
The letter was not mentioned again, which lead to the speculation that it was potentially a film-script-related document. It was later revealed that the documents contained child custody papers.
As per BBC News, it's been reported that 46-year-old Sudeikis had "no prior knowledge" of the circumstances of the letter's delivery despite it being served on his behalf.
Sources close to Sudeikis told Variety: "Papers were drawn up to establish jurisdiction relating to the children of Ms. Wilde and Mr. Sudeikis."
"Mr. Sudeikis had no prior knowledge of the time or place that the envelope would have been delivered as this would solely be up to the process service company involved and he would never condone her being served in such an inappropriate manner," it added.
Wilde met Sudeikis - perhaps best known by fans as Ted Lasso in the sitcom of the same name - back in 2011. They got engaged in 2012 and share two children, Otis aged eight, and Daisy, aged five. After nearly 10 years together, the two actors ended their seven-year engagement in November 2020.
In response to the incident, NATO managing director and head of CinemaCon Mitch Neuhauser told Variety that it would re-elevate its security protocol.
"To protect the integrity of our studio partners and the talent, we will reevaluate our security protocols," Neuhauser said.
CinemaCon also added in their statement: "We will act accordingly because it’s the right thing to do. We want to do the safe, proper thing."
Despite the incident, Wilde's Don't Worry Darling presentation made headlines after CinemaCon got a sneak peek of the trailer. The film features her current romantic partner Harry Styles as the lead, alongside Florence Pugh.
Wilde told the audience that the movie is "a love letter to movies that push the boundaries of our imagination" and cited films such as Matrix, Inception, and The Truman Show as inspiration.
The film is due to be released in theaters by Warner Bros in September.
