Like many people, Anne Hathaway has admitted that she doesn’t like it when people call her by her real name, preferring a nickname instead.
The Princess Diaries actress, who just recently turned 40, is used to performing under a lot of different names throughout her career, including Mia Thermopolis, Fantine, and Andy Sachs - just to name a few.
But the problem is with her own first name, Anne.
When the actress appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last year, she set the record straight about her name.
Kicking off the show, host, Fallon asked whether or not he can call Hathaway, ‘Annie’, as a lot of her close friends do.
However, the actress immediately replied: “Call me Annie!”
Not just limiting this to her close friends, it seemed the star would prefer to go by Annie to everyone.
“Everybody. Everybody, call me Annie, please,” Hathaway said.
Clearly, the Les Misérables star had something to say as she decided to “spill the tea” behind her name choice to Fallon.
Hathaway explained that when she was 14 years old she had to make her choice on what she wanted her name to be on her SAG card.
Check out the interview below:For those who don't know, a SAG card basically proves an actor's membership to the Screen Actors Guild, an American labor union representing performers - who knew?
So, naturally, a young Anne Hathaway gave her full birth name, without realizing that now people will always know her as Anne.
But, why does the actress have such beef with her first name?
The Devil Wears Prada star admitted: “The only person who ever calls me Anne is my mother, and she only does it when she’s really mad at me.
“And, so every time, like, I step out in public and someone calls my name, I think they’re going to yell at me.”
For Hathaway, it is quite literally a case of feeling like she is in trouble 24/7 when people use her real name, Anne.
The actress understands that fans and colleagues don’t want to be “presumptuous” and assume they can use whatever name they like for her. However, on sets, she said: “Nobody is comfortable calling me Anne ever. It doesn't fit. I’m an Annie.
"And so people call me, like, ‘Miss H.’ People call me ‘Hath.’ So feel free, call me anything but Anne.”
Twitter supporters are getting behind Hathaway’s wish to be known as Annie.
One user commented: “I LOVE that you go by Annie! I will never think of you as Ann [sic] again!”
So, there we have it, if you ever are lucky enough to meet Anne Hathaway, make sure you call her Annie, not Anne!
