Patrick Stewart made painful confession about his children three years before his death
Patrick Stewart openly admitted that his strained relationship with his children brought him "significant grief" later in life.
Long before his passing at the age of 86, the veteran actor spoke openly about the personal cost of his dedication to the stage and screen.
While his work earned him global acclaim, the relentless pursuit of acting created distance at home that proved difficult to mend over the decades.
During an October 2023 interview with the Irish Independent, Stewart reflected on the deep emotional toll of that estrangement. "There’s not a day that goes by that I’m not pained by the memory of my children, who they were and by a sense of responsibility that they became who they are in part because of me and my influence or lack of influence on them," he explained.
He also acknowledged where his priorities had remained throughout his life. "I always put my acting work first, before my family," he said plainly.
Stewart shared two children, son Daniel and daughter Sophie, with his first wife, Sheila Falconer. The couple married in 1966 and divorced in 1990, after which Stewart navigated two subsequent marriages, eventually marrying Sunny Ozell in 2013.
The challenge of fatherhood on and off screen
Stewart was asked during the 2023 conversation whether he had modeled his defining role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation after the kind of father he had wished for himself as a child.
He responded with profound honesty about his private regrets. "I think it might have been more the one I wished I was," he divulged, acknowledging how difficult it had been to reach his own standards as a parent.
He explained that the distance between himself and his adult children had become impossible to ignore. "Given that I’m separated from my children now, we don’t have relationships, they have become very important," he said.
The actor reflected on how unexpected the separation felt as time marched forward. "I never thought that this would happen, but both my children are in their 50s, they’re not children anymore, they’re adults. And my relationship with them is practically non-existent."
Looking back on career priorities and regret
The subject of his family was not entirely new for Stewart, who had previously addressed his parenting choices decades earlier.
In a 2009 interview with the Independent, he admitted that he "could’ve done better as a parent, when [his] kids were little." Looking back on those early decades of his career, he reflected, "I was just obsessed with my work and everything else took second place."
At that time, Stewart noted that he was trying to focus on being present for a new generation. "I’m trying to correct that now whenever possible with my grandchildren," he explained, adding that "my own children seem to have forgiven me."
Yet his later statements demonstrated that the strain between them remained unresolved.
Stewart passed away at his home in Los Angeles after facing Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia.
