Taylor Swift fans are comparing one of her recent late show ensembles to Princess Diana's iconic "revenge" dress.

On November 11, the 'All Too Well' singer appeared on Late Night With Seth Meyers to promote her new album Red (Taylor's version).

And it didn't escape the notice of her eagle-eyed fans that her chosen outfit, a black off-the-shoulder mini dress, bore a striking resemblance to the dress worn by the late Princess Diana at a 1994 dinner at the Serpentine Gallery in Kensington Gardens.

As stylish as it was, the figure-hugging dress was regarded as not fit for someone of her status.

It was dubbed the Princess of Wales' revenge dress because she wore it on the same day that her husband Prince Charles revealed in a tell-all documentary that his and Princess Diana's relationship had "irretrievably broken down".

And as is typical of the ex-country singer's fanbase, there was a lot of speculation as to whether the LBD had any significance where the theme of revenge was concerned.

Some fans thought Scooter Braun might have been the inspiration behind the dress as he famously acquired and sold the rights to Swift's music masters.

Others speculated that her ex-boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal, who her popular track 'All Too Well' is thought to be about, was the dress's muse. She dated the actor for about three months back in 2012, when she was 20 and he was 29.

In any case, fans LOVED the outfit, with one commenting: "Diana may have invented the revenge dress but Taylor Swift OUTSOLD. Diana walked so Taylor could run."

Another remarked: "Taylor’s dress tonight on late night seth looked a lot like princess diana’s revenge dress… revenge on j*ke gyllenh**l or revenge as in BETTER THAN REVENGE (taylor’s version)?! she’s nonstop and i’m hear for it. @taylorswift13 #Red Taylor's Version #ItsRedSeason."

A third said: "I am a firm believer that Princess Diana would have LOVED Taylor Swift."

A fourth commenter added: "Great interview (and killer dress) on @LateNightSeth . You can't help liking this lovely, talented and very smart young woman. Clapping hands sign #TaylorSwift."
