Selena Gomez really is a media darling, and over the years she's gone from strength to strength. Beginning her career at the Disney Channel, she soon graduated from that and became a talented artist and musician in her own right, and has since released three solo albums: Stars Dance, For You, and Revival. She's also starred in a number of movies, such as Spring Breakers, Getaway and The Fundamentals of Caring. She's also still flavour of the month due to her status as executive producer of the hit Netflix high school drama 13 Reasons Why - currently on its second season, but recently renewed for the third.

She's also quite the babe. Yes, Selena's good looks have served her well, and have bagged her modelling work for luxurious, lucrative brands such as Sears, Adidas and Louis Vuitton. Not only that, but she's managed to turn the heads of a fair few male celebrities, including Justin Bieber, Nick Jonas, Zedd, and The Weeknd. She's quite the beauty, but it seems that not everybody agrees. Renowned Italian fashion designer Stefano Gabbana has offered his two cents about Gomez's appearance, and suffice to say that his comments have provoked a hell of a lot of controversy.

The whole fiasco started when the Italian fashion Instagram account The Cat Walk Italia posted a tribute to Gomez's sense of style on its feed, featuring Selena decked out in a series of fabulous crimson outfits. The tribute was captioned: "#selenagomez rocks red dresses ❤ Choose your fave: 1,2,3,4 or 5? [sic]" In the comments section, Stefano Gabbana (one half of the acclaimed fashion label Dolce and Gabbana) wrote "É proprio brutta!!!", which translates to English as "She’s so ugly!!!"

The outcry which followed this comment was immediate and incendiary, and things only heated up when Gabbana added fuel to the fire. Soon after calling Selena ugly, he appeared to agree with a particularly rude troll, who wrote: "She looks like a Pomeranian dog." Gabbana replied, "hahahahahaha is true hahahaha. [sic]"

Needless to say, Selena's fans were quick to leap to her defence in the comments section. One enraged fan wrote: "@stefanobabbana you’re tired and over. Your homophobic, misogynistic, body-shaming existence will not thrive in 2018. It is no longer tolerable or chic. Please take many seats,” while a Twitter user added: "Dear Stefano Gabbana, it’s because of people like you that young girls around the globe have body image issues. That comment was beyond despicable and you REALLY lost all the respect the fashion world had for you constantly acting so immaturely. No class whatsoever."

This isn't the first time that Gabbana has rocked the boat by insulting another celebrity. In the past he has body shamed Lady Gaga, Kate Moss and Victoria Beckham on social media. He has also, despite being a gay man himself, been accused of homophobia, after stating that he opposed gay adoption, stating: "The only family is the traditional one … No chemical offsprings and rented uterus. Life has a natural flow, there are things that should not be changed." Gabbana has thus far declined to comment on the Instagram message.
