Piers Morgan says Trump was fooled by prank-caller pretending to be him
Piers Morgan has claimed that Donald Trump received a prank call on Air Force One last year from an imposter pretending to be him.
The then-president did not realize that he'd been prank called until he phoned Morgan as he made his way to vote in Florida last year.
While the alleged incident took place in October 2020, it did not become public knowledge until Morgan recounted it in an interview with the BBC's Americast podcast.
The pair, who has famously been friends, had a falling out last year over Trump's handling of the ongoing pandemic.
The BBC's Jon Sopel questioned why Trump had called Morgan out of the blue last year, and his answer was hilarious.
The outspoken presenter described "an absolutely hilarious story, where somebody had called [Trump] pretending to be me the day before and got through to him on Air Force One".
Morgan said that the 45th president did not realize that he'd been pranked, saying: "They had a conversation with Trump thinking he was talking to me."
The BBC reports that while the identity of the prankster(s) is not known, if true, this is not the first time that a political leader has been subject to a prank call.
Both Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, while he was foreign secretary, have been tricked over the phone.
However, given Trump's then status as the leader of the Free World, if this prank did take place, it would throw into question the security of countless private conversations.
"We had a very nice conversation... I always got on well with Trump," Morgan said of the call the pair had in October.
However, he added that Trump's "character flaws - the chronic narcissism, the desire to make everything about himself" made him a "useless leader".
Morgan went on to say that Trump's behavior in the wake of the November 2020 presidential election was the final nail in their relationship's coffin, as it was "so obviously on a pathway" to the Capitol Hill riots on 6 January.
"I just felt - no, I'm done with you now," Morgan said.
