Prince Harry has blasted his father Prince Charles' parenting and said he passed on "pain and suffering".

The former senior member of the royal family, 36, made the revelations on Thursday, May 13, as he explained that he and wife Meghan Markle moved to Los Angeles because his father passed on a "cycle" of "genetic pain and suffering".

In an interview on Dax Shepard's 'Armchair Expert' podcast, Harry said: "He treated me the way he was treated."

"It's a lot of genetic pain and suffering that gets passed on anyway," he added.

He explained that had been considering leaving the Royal Family since his "early 20s" because of "what it did to my mom".

He added: "So we as parents should be doing the most we can to try and say, 'You know what? That happened to me, I'm going to make sure that doesn't happen to you'."

Meghan gave a nod to Princess Diana in her first TV appearance since her bombshell Oprah interview:

Harry said he wants to "break the cycle" of how people in his family have been raised.

He said: "I never saw it, I never knew about it, and then suddenly I started to piece it together and go, 'OK, so this is where he went to school, this is what happened, I know this about his life, I also know that is connected to his parents, so that means he's treated me the way he was treated, so how can I change that for my own kids?'

"And here I am, I moved my whole family to the US, that wasn't the plan but sometimes you've got to make decisions and put your family first and put your mental health first."

Harry said that the time he spent as a senior member of the Royal Family was "a mixture between 'The Truman Show' and being in a zoo".

He went on to explain that the wild partying he did as a younger man, which saw him experiment with binge drinking and marijuana, was the result of "childhood trauma".
