Tributes have already shared on social media for the 'Brown Sugar' hitmaker, with journalist Marc Lamont Hill posting on X: “My sources tell me that D’Angelo has passed. Wow. I have no words. May he rest in perfect peace.”
DJ Premier wrote: "Such a sad loss to the passing of D’angelo. We have so many great times. Gonna miss you so much. Sleep Peacefully D. Love You KING."
Journalist IAMNJERA also added: “I don’t even have the words… D’Angelo’s music is the soundtrack to my writing. My place of peace. Brown Sugar, Voodoo, Black Messiah - that trifecta has gotten me through so many times. I don’t know how to even begin to process losing a giant like him… This one hurts."

The late star, who was born in Richmond, Virginia, rose to stardom in the mid-1990s with his debut album 'Brown Sugar', which spawned the hits 'Lady,' “Cruisin’, 'Me and Those Dreamin’ Eyes of Mine' and 'Brown Sugar.'
The project was a massive success, earning a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album as well as a platinum plaque from the RIAA.
Five years later, D’Angelo released Voodoo, and it topped the charts and remains a genre-defining masterpiece.
However, the album's success brought unintended consequences for D’Angelo, as his 'How Does It Feel?' music video led to an unwanted sex symbol label, prompting him to largely withdraw from the public eye and go on a long hiatus.
The crooner eventually made his return to the music industry in 2014 with Black Messiah, an album that earned him two Grammy Awards for Best R&B Album and Best R&B Song.
