Ricky Gervais has responded after it was announced that Oscar-winner Will Smith would be banned from attending the Oscars for a period of 10 years.

After meeting virtually on Friday to discuss disciplinary action, the Academy announced the decade-long ban in a statement.

The statement read: "Today, the Board of Governors convened a meeting to discuss how best to respond to Will Smith’s actions at the Oscars, in addition to accepting his resignation.

"The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards."

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it didn't take Gervais long to add his two cents.

Taking to Twitter to respond to the news, the 60-year-old funnyman wrote: "Hopefully, he'll only do 6 years with good behaviour."

The Office creator has been quite vocal about last month's altercation between Smith, 53, and Rock, 57.

The comic told his fans during a live Q&A session that the incident had "really annoyed" him.

He continued: "I don't know what's going on in [Smith's] life, I don't know why he did it. No one knows why he did it. He's got issues.

"Obviously it was double shocking that it happened at the Oscars with everyone in tuxedos. Of course, you see that thing in bars on a Saturday night - but not the most privileged people on the planet slapping each other."

The comedian went on to add: "There is no justification. That annoyed me - when people were saying, 'Oh he deserved it. You shouldn't tell jokes about people.'"

Gervais also joked at a recent show in London that he would not have made a gag about Jada Pinkett Smith's hair, like Rock had done - instead he would have joked about her "boyfriend."

The quip was in response to her previous relationship with August Alsina, 29, who she admitted to having an "entanglement" with during her marriage to Smith.

The Nutty Professor star said during her Red Table Talk show: "It was a relationship, absolutely. I was in a lot of pain, and I was very broken.

"In the process of that relationship, I definitely realized that you can't find happiness outside yourself. I just wanted to feel good, It had been so long since I felt good... and it was really a joy to just help heal somebody."
