Robert Irwin has long been following in the footsteps of his late, great father Steve Irwin, but one particular act left their fans emotional.

Steve Irwin tragically died in 2006 at the age of 44 when a stingray stung him in the chest whilst in the middle of filming.

The zookeeper and conservationist had been filming his documentary series, Ocean's Deadliest, in the Great Barrier Reef with Philippe Cousteau Jr. when he was pierced in the chest by a short-tail stingray barb.

The stinger penetrated his thoracic wall, causing massive trauma, and his death is believed to be the only fatality from a stingray captured on video.

Though his son Robert was only three years old when his father passed away, he has carried on his father's legacy at the Australia Zoo.

One such moment came in 2019 when a then-15-year-old Robert shared a photo of him feeding his father's favorite crocodile, Murray, during a display in front of visitors at the zoo.

He shared the image alongside one of his father in the exact same spot, captioning it: "Dad and me feeding Murray... same place, same croc - two photos 15 years apart."

Fans soon flooded the comments with praise, writing: "This is truly everything! Your Dad must be overjoyed to see you literary walk in his footsteps!"

"I think the whole world would agree, your dad would be super proud of you," another added. "Keep on rocking, man."

"Well I didn’t expect to cry at 7:30 on a Wednesday morning but here why are," wrote a third.

Just last year, Robert shared how he was overcome with emotion after seeing his dad's waxwork for the first time.

Robert also became the youngest Australian celebrity to be featured in Madame Tussauds Sydney, according to Sunrise, when the model was unveiled in November 2024.

Video footage saw him choke up as he saw his own model placed next to that of his father at the attraction on November 28.

Robert has now become the youngest Australian celebrity to be featured in Madame Tussauds Sydney, according to Sunrise.

Video footage saw him choke up as he saw his own model placed next to that of his father at the attraction on November 28.

He said in the clip, shared by News.com.au: "That is amazing. It’s the first time in a long time that he’s not just a picture."

He was seen wiping his eyes as he shook his head and took a deep breath, before walking away from the cameras.

He told Sunrise after seeing the new model of himself: "This is one of the most surreal moments of my entire life. This is just incredible.

"I just keep looking at every little bit going, ‘It’s me! It is me!’ I don’t know if the world is ready for two of me."

Robert called the moment "really special" and was delighted to see himself next to the model of his dad, which was made in 2015.

"It was the first time I’d ever gotten to see my dad’s wax figure. I’d seen pictures of it, but I’d never seen it in real life," he revealed.

"I was overcome with emotion. And I didn’t think that was gonna happen, but I was actually quite emotional seeing it.

"Dad, for the last 17 years of my life, has been pictures and video, and to actually see him kind of just standing there, it was a lot. It was actually a lot to take in."

He added: "It was very emotional,” he said. “But you know what? My life’s about continuing his legacy, so the fact that I get to be there with him now means a lot. I’m truly so grateful."
