Sally Field has recently opened up about the heartfelt gesture Robin Williams made for her after her father tragically passed away.

Field, best known for her roles in Norma Rae and the theatre production of All My Sons, shared a wonderful story about her former late co-star Robin Williams, during a difficult period in her life.

The pair starred alongside each other in the iconic movie Mrs. Doubtfire, which was dubbed as one of Williams' most loved roles on the big screen.

Speaking to Variety, the 77-year-old recalled what happened when she got the news that her father had suffered another stroke.

"I never shared this story before," Field said.

“I was in the camper outside of the courtroom where we were shooting the divorce scene," she continued. "My father had a stroke a couple of years before and was in a nursing facility. I got a phone call from the doctor saying my father had passed - a massive stroke."

She didn't know if she could leave the set to say her final goodbye's, so instead, she asked the person on the line if he could deliver a message on her behalf.

"He asked if I wanted them to put him on the resuscitator. I said: ‘No, he did not want that. Just let him go. And please lean down and say: 'Sally says goodbye.'"

Field then said that she tried to put on a brave face and go and do her job, but it was extremely difficult given the circumstances.

"I was of course beside myself,” Field said. "I came on the set trying with all my might to act. I wasn’t crying. Robin came over, pulled me out of the set, and asked: 'Are you okay?'"

She eventually told her co-star the news, and he jumped into action.

"Oh my God, we need to get you out here right now," she recalled him saying. "And he made it happen - they shot around me the rest of the day.

"I could go back to my house, call my brother, and make arrangements. It’s a side of Robin that people rarely knew: He was very sensitive and intuitive," she added.

Williams left a lasting impact on his co-stars during the filming of Mrs. Doubtfire including Lisa Jakub, who was a teenager when she played the eldest daughter of Williams’ character.

Jakub previously told Fox News that he was a person for her to lean on when it came to discussing the topic of mental health.

"He would talk to me about his struggles and the things that he went through," Jakub revealed. "And it was the first time that I felt like, 'Oh, I’m not a freak. I don’t have to hide this about myself. This is just something that some of us have to deal with.'"

Williams died on August 11 2014 after taking his own life while battling mental health issues as well as Lewy body dementia.

Lewy body dementia AKA LBD is the second most common type of dementia after Alzheimer's disease and can affect a person's thinking, movement as well as their moods.

In a few days, it will be 10 years since he passed away and since then, the research and awareness surrounding the potentially debilitating illness has grown.
