Salma Hayek has opened up about "crying" over a sex scene that she claims "wasn't in the script".

In an interview with ax Shephard and Monica Padman of the Armchair Expert podcast, the star explained that filming certain scenes for the 1995 movie Desperado - which coincidentally made her a household name - left her "afraid" and "sobbing".

Per the Daily Mail, the 54-year-old actress said that she was so frightened to film one particular intimate scene with her co-star Antonio Banderas that she began to cry on set.

Hayek explained that she wasn't even told that there was a raunchy scene to film between their characters.

Directed by Robert Rodriguez, the movie follows Banderas' El Mariachi character on his vengeful quest, as he crosses paths with Hayek's character, Carolina, along the way.

"So, when we were going to start shooting, I started to sob... I don't know that I can do it. I'm afraid," Salma recalled.

"One of the things I was afraid of was Antonio - he was an absolute gentleman and so nice, and we're still super close friends - but he was very free. It scared me that for him, it was like nothing," she added.

"I started crying, and he was like, 'Oh my God. You're making me feel terrible.' And I was so embarrassed that I was crying."

She explained that both Rodriguez and Banderas "were amazing", and that despite the difficult experience, the director "never put pressure" on her.

"I was not letting go of the towel," she said. "They would try to make me laugh. I would take it off for two seconds and start crying again. But we got through it. We did the best with what we could do at the time."

"When you're not you, then you can do it. But I keep thinking of my father and my brother," she added. "And are they going to see it? And are they going to get teased? Guys don't have that. Your father will be, 'Yeah! That's my son!"

In the movie, the actress also starred alongside Cheech Marin, Steve Buscemi, Danny Trejo, and Quentin Tarantino.

She and Banderas went on to appear in a number of other films together including the 2003 Rodriguez film Once Upon A Time In Mexico, 1995's Four Rooms, 2011's Puss In Boots, and 2002's Frida.
