Yes, what you have heard is true: Selena Gomez has lost her title of the most-followed woman on Instagram - and to a Nickelodeon alumna, no less.

It has been quite a 2020 for Gomez on the social media platform. At the start of the year, she released her third chart-topping studio album, Rare, from which she has shared plenty of snippets and snaps of track teasers, BTS music video shots, and even launched her Rare Beauty makeup line -- meaning she has had plenty of content to share that her fans adored.

Gomez even broke an Instagram personal record last year, when a post showing pictures from her friend's bachelorette party became her own most-liked post on the platform.

Posted back in February 2019, the collection of swimsuit snaps got over 11.8 million likes in just 19 hours and has become the 8th most liked photo ever posted on the platform. It now has over 14.5 million likes.

Gomez has also been showing off her latest tattoos:

Despite this, the 27-year-old 'Good For You' singer has been overtaken as the most followed woman on the platform.

As of this writing, Gomez boasts a whopping 173,810,165 followers (which, in case you were wondering, is 36285946% higher than me). But that number has not been high enough to keep Ariana Grande at bay.

Grande, 26, has overtaken Gomez in spectacular fashion, amassing 181,459,075 followers.

This isn't really surprising considering Ariana has not only showcased her naturally curly hair on the social media platform, but also recently been posting more than twice as frequently as Gomez.

Grande is known for posting more Instagram stories and new permanent grid posts multiple times daily on most days, she has also been very busy with recent projects - such as taking part in ABC's Disney Family Singalong where she sang the popular Hercules track 'I Won't Say I'm In Love'.

Gomez has also openly spoken out about limiting her time on social media.

Last year, a source told E! that Gomez has made a conscious decision to reduce posting on her account, saying:

"[Gomez] isn’t going to be posting much on social because she is more aware of how social takes a toll on her mental health, but she will be updating her fans once in a while."

In addition, during an Instagram Live stream in late 2018, Gomez revealed that she doesn't really care about having the most followed title anyway, saying:

"Numbers don’t matter. None of this matters. I don’t care how many followers I have. I don’t. It’s insane so many people are obsessed. Like, chill out."

And Gomez is right - social media is supposed to be fun. Numbers, likes, comments, and followers do not matter - so if you feel like social media is taking a toll on your mental health, why not take a break or limit your screentime?
