On December 31, Hollywood legend Betty White sadly passed away.
The 99-year-old - who was perhaps most famous for playing Rose Nylund in The Golden Girls - died just 17 days before her 100th birthday, when she would have become a centenarian.
People have since flocked to social media to mourn her passing, sharing clips and photos of the actor in celebration of her life.
Now, some users have come up with a new "challenge" as a way of honoring the star on what would have been her 100th birthday.
The 'Betty White Challenge' pays homage to White’s infamous love of animals by asking people to donate to an animal shelter on January 17 in honor of the beloved star.
A graphic being widely shared under the hashtag ‘BettyWhiteChallenge’ gives these instructions:
"On Betty White’s 100th birthday, January 17th, everyone should pick a local rescue or animal shelter in your area and donate just $5 in Betty White’s name," the now-viral post reads. "Make her 100th birthday the movement she deserves."
One tweet sharing the challenge with the message "please pass it on" has been retweeted a staggering 18,000 times since it was first posted two days ago.
Meanwhile, Newsweek reports that the Freedom Animal Rescue and Sanctuary in Michigan has already raised $2,951 since sharing the challenge.
A lifelong animal lover, White was outspoken about her feelings for our four-legged friends. In her 2011 book Betty & Friends: My Life at the Zoo, she wrote about her obsession, saying "my preoccupation with animals is an open secret."
She was also said to have cared for 26 dogs at one point - but it wasn't just household pets that she held her heart. As well as caring for an array of her own animals, White was also heavily involved with a number of zoos and named an honorary zookeeper in 2013 by the Los Angeles chapter of the American Association of Zoo Keepers.
There's also a section of Columbus Zoo (the entrance to the Heart of Africa exhibit) named the 'Betty White Way' in her honor.
The Betty White Challenge is certainly an internet trend I can get on board with.
