The 51-year-old actress stars in the six-part Netflix miniseries Griselda as Colombian drug trafficker Griselda Blanco, the so-called “Cocaine Godmother” who ran a cartel in 1980s Miami.

But despite decades in the industry, Vergara admitted she felt self-conscious while filming intimate scenes for the show.

Speaking during Netflix’s A Conversation with Sofia Vergara event in Los Angeles, the Modern Family star revealed: “I don’t think I’ve ever done a sex scene,” cited by the Independent.

She explained that during her time on Modern Family, there was “never been a scene of that nature” with her on-screen husband, Ed O’Neill.

“I’m 50. When I was 30, I wouldn’t have worried,” she continued. “I think I was worried that I was going to look horrific.”

She confessed to worrying about camera angles, adding: “I was like, ‘Where are they shooting me? The cellulite? From the side.’ I’m vain, I guess. That one kept me awake [at night], I think.”

However, Vergara said that the sex scenes “came out good” thanks to director Andy Baiz, who was “artistic” and “made me feel super comfortable.”

She explained that Baiz reassured her the camera would never linger on her body for long.

While her appearance has sparked insecurities, Vergara credits her looks with opening doors in Hollywood, telling El País: “It would be absurd to deny it or for that to make me feel bad. My giant boobs and my body opened doors for me; they were my passport to the world when I was 20 years old when I started as a model, but today I’m 51 years old and I’m still here.”

She explained that the first time she realized the power of her looks was back in high school, sharing: “Not that it made me feel any better, but you realize that they treat you differently. From a very young age, I’ve known my strengths and I’ve played to them.”

Vergara acknowledged that her success is also tied to her willingness to take risks, telling the outlet: “I don’t do brain surgery, it’s just entertainment, and the worst that can happen to me is that they can say I look ugly or that this jacka** doesn’t know how to act. I can take it.”

She added: “If you only see my boobs, then that’s your problem. There are women who are prettier, younger, who have bigger breasts and a better body than me, but I’m still around because I have demonstrated that I can stay.”
