Reports confirmed that Payne, who rose to fame as one-fifth of the popular boyband One Direction, had died on Wednesday (October 16), after falling from a third-floor balcony in his room at the Hotel CasaSur in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Multiple outlets reported that the police were called to the venue for a disturbance caused by an unnamed male guest.

The manager, who was the one to make the call, reportedly told the operator that the guest "has a balcony, and we are afraid they might do something to put their life at risk."

Shortly after authorities arrived, a loud thud was allegedly heard in the interior courtyard and Payne's body was discovered shortly after.

It was confirmed that the former One Direction member had suffered "very serious" injuries as a result of the fall and even though he received medical attention, there was "no possibility of resuscitation."

A full investigation has been launched into Payne's death, including an autopsy to provide further details on his passing.

In the wake of the tragic news, fans have gathered outside of the hotel in the Palermo neighborhood to hold a candle-lit vigil for the late star.

Hundreds of people with tears streaming down their faces took a moment to remember Payne for all the amazing things he did for the world before his untimely death.

Police were forced to cordon off the entrance as crowds grew larger, with forensic investigators seen entering and exiting in white protective suits and blue gloves.

Some fans even sang One Direction songs as they consoled one another.

Payne found fame as part of the popular boyband One Direction, who were active between the years 2010-2016.

Despite them calling it quits after one of the members, Zayn Malik, decided to leave the band, their legacy lives on.

They released five albums – Up All Night (2011), Take Me Home (2012), Midnight Memories (2013), Four (2014) and Made in the A.M. (2015) – embarked on four headline tours, and racked up 28 Top 75 singles in the United Kingdom.

Four of those singles, beginning with their 2011 debut 'What Makes You Beautiful', made it to Number 1.

Our thoughts are with Payne's loved ones and fans as they mourn the loss of the singer.
