The Weeknd has accused the Grammy's of "corruption" after he failed to receive a single nomination despite a year of undeniable musical success.
This resulted in many fans claiming that the 30-year-old was robbed of the industry recognition that they believe he deserves, prompting The Weeknd himself to speak out about the snub.
In the video below, The Weeknd wins favorite Soul/R&B album at the 2020 American Music Awards:The Weeknd wrote in an Instagram post: "The Grammys remain corrupt. You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency."
The 30-year-old was expected to receive multiple nominations for his hit single 'Blinding Lights', which although released in November 2019 went on to become one of the most popular songs of 2020, the Metro reports.
It was the best selling single of the year in the UK, spending eight consecutive weeks at the top of the charts, and it had considerable success in the US too, where it spent four weeks at the top.
'Blinding Lights' also reached number one in various other countries including Ireland, Australia, Canada, Germany, and France among other countries and inspired a popular dance trend on TikTok.
However, despite this success, 'Blinding Lights' was not nominated in the record of the year and song of the year categories.
The Weeknd's post about the Grammys, which was made just over 12 hours ago at the time of writing, has received over 2 million likes and been flooded with supportive comments.
TMZ reports that the singer was in discussions with the Grammys executives about his upcoming performance at the Superbowl Half Time Show, which is scheduled to take place a week after the event.
While The Weeknd did negotiate a way to perform at both shows, the situation got "very testy" with the Grammy's team pressuring the singer into choosing one over the other.
The Recording Academy's chair Harvey Mason Jr denied the Super Bowl affected the nominations, saying: "We understand that The Weeknd is disappointed at not being nominated. I was surprised and can empathize with what he's feeling. His music this year was excellent…
"We were thrilled when we found out he would be performing at the upcoming Super Bowl and we would have loved to have him also perform on the Grammy stage the weekend before …To be clear, voting in all categories ended well before The Weeknd's performance at the Super Bowl was announced, so in no way could it have affected the nomination process."
