The producers of Tiger King have threatened to sue Louis Theroux over his upcoming documentary on Joe Exotic.

According to The Metro, the British documentary filmmaker, who first interviewed the eccentric owner of the tiger sanctuary back in 2011, has recently released a follow-up.

The follow-up, entitled Shooting Joe Exotic, aired on BBC Two on Monday, April 5.

In one scene in the documentary in question, Louis revealed that he had received a legal notice from Royal Goode Productions, who represent people who hold contracts with stars of Tiger King.

Per The Metro, the letter from the producers read:

"We are writing to point out that the participation of any of these individuals in your program would violate their exclusive agreements with RGP, and put you in the position of liable for tortious interference with contract."

Exotic, who has previously appealed to Donald Trump for a Presidential pardon over his prison sentence, reached out to Theroux from behind bars to make a new film detailing his incarceration.

In a recent interview with the publication, Theroux stated: "[Joe Exotic] sent a message saying he was trying to get in touch and wanted me to come and tell 'the real story' as he put it.

"Then on the back of that, via an intermediary, we exchanged a couple of emails, and then, when I went back, I visited his lawyer Francisco Hernandez a couple of times.

"Francisco is involved with the campaign to have Joe pardoned. There’s an archive of letters coming in from Joe and Joe sending letters back and so it’s sort of dealt with in that way."

Exotic was previously convicted of orchestrating a murder-for-hire plot to have animal rights activist and rival big cat keeper Carole Baskin killed, and various animal abuse charges in 2019, for which he is now serving 22 years in prison.

His husband, Dillon Passage revealed in August of 2020 that the infamous zookeeper is due to return in the upcoming second series of Tiger King, stating: "It’s going to be very interesting because it will tell a little bit of Joe’s arrest and afterward."
