Chet Hanks has revealed the reason why he often speaks in a Jamaican accent, which had previously sparked backlash online.

Per Metro, Chet, who is the 31-year-old son of Hollywood stars Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, was accused of cultural appropriation when he first started speaking in the accent at the Golden Globes in 2020.

Responding to the backlash, the newspaper reports that the Your Honor star has fiercely defended his use of what is known as Jamaican patois and claimed he had the backing of those directly from Jamaica.

Now, in a new interview, the actor and would-be rapper has opened up about the origin of his Jamaican accent.

Check out the interview below:

"I was hooking up with this chick, one day she was on the phone with her family in Jamaica and she was really in the middle of a heated conversation," Chet told Channel 5 reporter Andrew Callaghan before suddenly speaking in a faux-Jamaican accent.

He added: "I really had no idea what the f**k she was saying… I’m like, 'Wow! So break that down'. She was just telling me how to say different s**t, so for a week I was really on a Jamaican tip, and that just happened to be the week of the Golden Globes.

He then talked about the reaction that his use of patois received at the awards ceremony, saying: "I had Jamaicans blowing up my Instagram, 'respect general, respect! Come to the island'. Jamaican people showed me the most love hands down, then you got all these social justice warriors in America saying I’m a f*****g villain. ‘I don’t f*****g know, dude.

"If I’m interested in f*****g bullfighting, I can fly to Spain and watch a bullfight and if I want to talk to a Matador and say, 'Hey bro, can you teach me how to fight the bulls?' and he’s like, 'Hell yeah bro, put this on'."

"He’s stoked that I’m stoked. Some a*****e out there is gonna say I’m f****d up because I’m culturally appropriating the Matador culture."

In other news, Chet also announced that he's been signed by Soulja Boy's record label.
