Cher appears to have confirmed in a brief tweet that her mother has passed away at the age of 96.

Cher, 76, revealed via Twitter in September that her mother, Georgia Holt, had been hospitalized with pneumonia and recurring health difficulties.

The star wrote at the time: "Sorry I've Been Mia. Mom's Been Sick Off and On. She Just Got Out Of Hosp. She Had Pneumonia. She's Getting Better."

Cher returned to the platform the following day, where she thanked fans for their kind words and gave an update that her mother was home.

It appears that Georgia has since passed away as Cher took to Twitter on Saturday night to share an upsetting update.

She wrote: "Mom is gone," followed by a sad face emoji.

Naturally, fans have flocked to the comments to give their condolences to the iconic singer.

One person said: "I’m so very sorry to hear that your beloved mother has passed. My heart goes out to you. What a blessing to have had her in your life for as long as you did. May she rest in peace."

A second added: "Oh Cher, I am so sorry for your loss. You two were so much fun. Time doesn't heal this wound, it helps reshape it into comforting memories that make the grief tolerable. Keep honoring the memories."

State Senator Diane Savino concluded: "So sorry, nothing prepares you for the loss of your mother. No matter when!"

As per the Daily Mail, Cher paid tribute to her mother in the 2013 documentary Dear Mom, Love Cher. The footage showcased Georgia's life.

It details her childhood in Arkansas, alongside her six marriages as well as her career as a singer and actress whilst trying to support her daughter.

The footage also showed that Georgia's mother pressured her into having an abortion when she was pregnant with Cher after she split with her husband at the age of 19.

Georgie won a series of beauty competitions in her youth and she had dreamt of being a performer.

Our thoughts are with her family and friends.
