Demi Lovato has opened up about her decision to revert her pronouns back to she/her after using they/them since 2021.
The 30-year-old singer originally came out as nonbinary and revealed that she would be changing her pronouns to they/them in a video uploaded to Twitter in May 2021.
"Every day we wake up, we are given another opportunity & chance to be who we want & wish to be. I've spent the majority of my life growing in front of all of you… you've seen the good, the bad, & everything in between," Lovato captioned the short clip.
In it, the Camp Rock actress stated: "I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering."
Lovato then spoke about her decision to switch her pronouns on the Spout podcast in August 2022, while she was promoting her recent album Holy Fvck (which included a song that many netizens suspect was about her previous relationship with Wilmer Valderrama, who began dating a 17-year-old Lovato when he was 29).
She talked about her choice to change her female pronouns to they/them, describing how she was a "fluid" person who felt balanced in her "masculine and feminine energy."
She added: "When I was faced with the choice of walking into a bathroom and it said women and men, I didn't feel like there was a bathroom for me because I didn't feel necessarily like a woman. I didn't feel like a man. I just felt like a human.
"That's what they/them is about for me. It's just about feeling human at your core," she explained, via Out Magazine.
The '29' singer then discussed why she wanted to adopt she/her pronouns again, saying that her reasoning was based on the fact that she feels more feminine again. This change was reflected in her Instagram bio, which was amended to also include she/ her pronouns.
Lovato also addressed people accidentally misgendering her. "I think what's important is, like, nobody's perfect. Everyone messes up pronouns at some point, and especially when people are learning, it's just all about respect," she stated, per Elite Daily.
The former Disney Channel actress is known for being transparent about her life - including documenting her experience following a near-fatal fentanyl overdose in 2018.
As a result, she was hospitalized after suffering several strokes and a heart attack, according to American Addiction Centers. 'Skin Of My Teeth,' a song on her album Holy Fvck, is an empowering ode to life after her overdose.
