Speaking to the Daily Mail, he joked that he would have done some things differently if he knew he was going to live for over nine decades.

"Well, if I’d known I was going to live this long I’d have taken better care of myself!", he quipped.

One of his final film appearances saw him make a cameo in Mary Poppins Returns in 2018, alongside Emily Blunt and since then, the actor has directed his focus to his personal life, spending time with his four children as well as his seven grandchildren.

When asked about his secret to a long and healthy life, he light-heartedly told the outlet: "Well, I don’t know, all my friends are dead so I’m not going to complain!"

In order to honor the legend on his 97th birthday, fans have taken to social media to send him well wishes.

"Happy 97th Birthday to dazzling Dick Van Dyke, the internationally treasured, tireless ray of sunshine who brightened all of our childhoods and, even today, can turn our frowns upside down," wrote one user alongside a clip taken from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

"I don't think anything more clearly demonstrates Dick Van Dyke's icon status than the way the energy in the room immediately shifts the minute he steps out and falls back into the choreography like it's still 1963. Happy Birthday to a total legend," wrote another user.

A third cracked a cheeky joke about the situation writing: "In honor of Dick Van Dyke’s birthday, here is an..." attaching a picture of an "unsolicited Dick pic." (No, not that scarring kind!)
