Emma Watson has opened up about the emotional Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts special.

In an interview with Vogue, the 31-year-old actress admitted that she was "taken aback" by co-star Rupert Grint's confession of love.

The highly anticipated reunion - which saw Watson, Grint, Daniel Radcliffe, and other stars revisit the iconic film's set 20 years after the first movie was released - aired on New Years Day.

It featured many an emotional trip down memory lane which left both viewers and cast members shedding a nostalgic tear.

One of the most moving moments came during a conversation between Watson and Grint, who played on-screen friends-turned-love interests, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.

After admitting that they both considered leaving the series due to the pressures of fame, Grint made Watson well up when he spoke about the connection they had forged on set.

"We’re family, we always will be, even though we don't see each other all the time," said Grint. "It’s a strong bond that we'll always have, and we’ll always be part of each other’s lives."

His emotional speech moved Watson to tears, which she wiped away saying, "It's so nice to see you." After the pair shared a hug, Grint told her, "I love you."

He waited for a beat then added, "as friends," making them both burst out laughing.

"Just to be clear for everyone watching," said Watson.

In a later interview with Vogue, the actress reflected that their conversation was the most emotional part of making the reunion for her.

"When Rupert says things, he really means them. I was taken aback by how vulnerable and kind he was deciding to be so publicly," she explained.

Since starring in the Harry Potter franchise, Watson has played Belle in the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast, and Meg March in Little Women.

Elsewhere in her interview with Vogue, Watson revealed that she speaks to co-star Tom Felton "most weeks" - but that it can be difficult to keep in touch with other members of her Harry Potter family.

"[Radcliffe and Grint] both hate WhatsApp and their phones in general. Actually, as a three, we really try and stay off electronics so that doesn’t help for a massive amount of back and forth. We aren’t on a group chat but we speak individually.

"Rupert sends me pictures of [his daughter] Wednesday and I die. Dan and I generally try and calm each other’s nerves," she added.
