Miley Cyrus has never been one to shy away from the spotlight. Whether through her music videos or unusual public appearances, the chart-topping artist’s career has never been far removed from center stage. Now, thanks to some typically in-your-face new material, she’s at it again.
This week, the internet has been alive with rumors that Cyrus’ latest release contains several not-so-veiled references to her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth. The couple, who split last year after nearly a decade of partnership, have been the subject of much tabloid speculation since, with many looking to Cyrus’ lyrics for an explanation.
The new single, “Midnight Sky”, has been accompanied by a self-directed music video, in which a fully-nude Cyrus can be seen sporting a new blonde mullet before aiming what seems to be a lyrical onslaught at Hemsworth.
In particular, fans have pointed to the lines, “It‘s been a long time since I felt this good on my own / Lotta years went by with my hands tied up in your ropes,” as well as the chorus, “I was born to run, I don‘t belong to anyone, oh no / I don‘t need to be loved by you.”
Watch the video for "Midnight Sky" below:The onslaught continues with what appears to be references to new partners Kaitlynn Carter and Cody Simpson, with the lines, “See my lips on her mouth, everybody‘s talkin’ now, baby,” and, “See his hands ‘round my waist, thought you’d never be replaced, baby…”
Fans have noted that this isn’t the first time Cyrus seems to have referenced her relationship with Hemsworth. In her 2019 single “Slide Away”, released right in the aftermath of the split, the 27-year-old sang:
“Baby, we were found, but now we‘re lost / So it‘s time to let it go / I want my house in the hills / Don‘t want the whiskey and pills / Move on, we‘re not seventeen / I‘m not who I used to be …”
Though there has of course been no confirmation from the Cyrus camp, fans think that they can read between the lines.
