Several A-list stars appear in movie with extremely graphic real life sex scenes - viewers have been warned to watch it alone
A controversial film featuring a host of major Hollywood names has sparked warnings from viewers due to its highly explicit sexual content.
The movie, Nymphomaniac, directed by the famously experimental director Lars von Trier, is known for pushing boundaries both in storytelling and on-screen visuals. The two-part drama stars big Hollywood names, including Uma Thurman, Stellan Skarsgård, Shia LaBeouf, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Christian Slater.
What are the film's themes, and why has it been deemed controversial?
Released in two volumes, the film follows a self-described nymphomaniac who is found injured in an alley by an older man. As he cares for her, she recounts her life story across eight chapters, detailing her experiences from childhood through to age 50, including her relationships, struggles, and compulsive sexual behavior, while he offers his own often intellectual interpretations.
The film’s notoriety largely stems from its explicit scenes, which were created using a mix of acting and digital effects to simulate real sex acts. As a result, some viewers have urged others to be cautious about where they watch it.
“If your planing to watch Nymphomaniac pt.1 & 2. Watch it alone,” one person wrote online. Another echoed the sentiment, saying: “I feel like I should probably watch Nymphomaniac alone... Don’t ask questions.”
Before the film premiered, producer Louise Vesth talked to The Hollywood Reporter about how the scenes were made, revealing: “We shot the actors pretending to have sex and then had the body doubles who really did have sex and in post we will digital impose the two. So above the waist it will be the star and the below the waist it will be the doubles.”
The film proved divisive amongst viewers
Critical reaction to the film has been mixed but intense. The first instalment holds a stronger reception than the second, with reviewers split over its artistic ambition and explicit content.
Some praised its boldness and performances, with one critic writing: “With its wildly absurdist obscenities, fearlessly bold performances and wilfully indulgent lack of structure, Nymphomaniac provokes the now familiar symphony of sighs, gasps and laughs.”
Another described it as: “Outrageous, inspired, infuriating, puerile, confounding, cruel, beautiful, funny, Nymphomaniac is a film you can’t dismiss with a simple ‘good/not good’.”
However, others were less impressed, criticizing its tone and approach. One review argued: “For those who don’t equate sexual appetite with the intricacies of fly fishing, Nymphomaniac: Vol. 1 is more tiresome than titillating,” while another claimed: “Nymphomaniac is a peculiar, downbeat and decidedly male view of a woman's appetites, not an honest assessment of her multifarious desires.”
Despite the divided opinions, the film continues to generate discussion years after its release, with many agreeing on one thing: it’s probably not one to watch with company.
