Longtime Jeopardy host Alex Trebek has had an emotional reaction live on camera after he was shown a heartfelt message by a contestant on a recent episode.

Trebek, who has hosted the popular quiz show since 1984, has been going through chemotherapy to treat pancreatic cancer, and only returned to host the show in August of this year.

Check out the emotional footage from the episode in question:

The emotional incident occurred after Tournament of Champions contestant Dhruv Gaur decided to use his final round answer to convey a heartfelt message.

Turning down the chance to win $2,000, Gaur wrote: "We love you Alex!" instead of his question. Trebek himself seemed tearfully touched by the gesture, as you can see in the clip above.

Gaur later took to Twitter to write: "Sorry for west coast spoilers, but I'm really glad I got the opportunity to say to Alex what everybody at the tournament was thinking. For context, Alex had just shared with us that he was reentering treatment for pancreatic cancer. We were all hurting for him so badly.

He continued: "'When Final Jeopardy came up, I could've tried to puzzle it together, but really, just kept thinking about Alex, and thought he should know.  I'm just very grateful I got the opportunity to say what I know everyone was thinking. Sending all the love. #weloveyoualex [sic]"

Trebek first announced his cancer diagnosis in a video recorded on set in 2018. In the clip, Trebek vowed to beat the low survival rate statistics for the disease and to return as host as soon as possible.

He stated: "I’ve gone through a lot of chemotherapy and thankfully that is now over. I’m on the mend and that’s all I can hope for right now ... We have some exciting things coming up and I can’t wait to share them with you all. Let me tell you, it’s gonna be a good year."
