Black Mirror's latest season has just dropped and people are already raving about it online.

Ever since the sci-fi drama first hit our screens back in 2011, we've been hooked, but the latest season seems to have us in a chokehold unlike any other.

Starring the likes of Salma Hayek, Aaron Paul and Kate Mara, season 6 promises to be the most "unpredictable season yet."

According to a press release that was published yesterday (June 14) by Netflix's Tudum, a day before the release of the five-episode installment, the creator of the show, Charlie Brooker, said that he even "surprised himself" with the twists and turns of this season.

Check out the trailer for the new season:

"I’ve always felt that Black Mirror should feature stories that are entirely distinct from one another, and keep surprising people — and myself — or else what’s the point? It should be a series that can’t be easily defined, and can keep reinventing itself," the writer, creator, and executive producer said.

And that's exactly what he did, carrying the element of the "unknown" throughout the new episodes.

"Partly as a challenge, and partly to keep things fresh for both me and the viewer, I began this season by deliberately upending some of my own core assumptions about what to expect," Brooker told the outlet. "Consequently, this time, alongside some of the more familiar Black Mirror tropes we’ve also got a few new elements, including some I’ve previously sworn blind the show would never do, to stretch the parameters of what ‘a Black Mirror episode’ even is."

"The stories are all still tonally Black Mirror through-and-through — but with some crazy swings and more variety than ever before," he added.

It seems as though it resonated well with audiences too, as many took to Twitter to rave about one episode in particular.

"Loch Henry is so brilliantly dark, funny, and has one of the most f***ed up #BlackMirror twists to date. Acting is on point too," wrote one user while another added: "Loch Henry is one of the best black mirror episodes."

A third also agreed, tweeting: "Loch Henry maybe one of the best Black Mirror episodes there’s been."

"Haven’t stopped thinking about Loch Henry," another said. "The episode has the biggest twist of the season and there’s no way to describe it without flailing your arms and screaming “this is so f***** up!” #BlackMirror."

Pretty positive reviews from fans, but what did critics think?

Nick Hilton of the Independent gave the episode a solid three out of five stars, writing: "As a standalone, hour-long piece of meta true crime, Loch Henry is effective. Plenkin and Herrold stay – just about – on the right side of annoying..."

In the end though, Hilton did describe the episode as a little lacking, blaming "restraint or lack of ambition" before adding that "the episode becomes a little limp."

Lucy Mangan from the Guardian however seemed to love the episode a little more, describing it as a "retro affair" that plays on the idea that "monsters can hide in plain sight."

Season six of Black Mirror is now available to watch on Netflix.
