Maleficent may come from the story of Sleeping Beauty - but it sure ain't no fairytale!
Fans were on the edge of their seats when one of Disney's most notorious villains returned to screens in the trailer for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, the sequel to the 2014 fantasy hit.
Could she be more evil?! Witness Maleficent's disastrous antics in the darkest Disney trailer we've ever seen:The last film saw Maleficent grow to love her former enemy over the course of 16 years, even smiling happily as Aurora is crowned to unify the two kingdoms at the end.
But what happens after happily ever after? The incredibly dark new trailer shows Maleficent, otherwise known as Angelina Jolie, wreak havoc over the kingdom and become the supervillain we always knew she would be.
People on social media were completely here for it, with many taking to Twitter to share their glee. "Avengers who? Star Wars what? This stare-off will be THE cinematic moment of 2019 for me," wrote @AJLorenzini.
Others were amazed by the fairy's brand new look, with @amber_harris16 tweeting "I would just like to say look how gorgeous Angelina Jolie looks as Maleficent" and @DeepIceberg writing: "MALEFICENT'S NEW LOOK IS JUST.... SHKANSKSKSKSKS".
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil will pick up a few years after the events of Maleficent, and explore the "complex relationship" between her and soon-to-be-queen Aurora - using every CG effect in the playbook to achieve this, of course.
The official synopsis of the film reads:
"A fantasy adventure that picks up several years after Maleficent, in which audiences learned of the events that hardened the heart of Disney’s most notorious villain and drove her to curse a baby Princess Aurora, Maleficent II continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy (Angelina Jolie) and the soon to be Queen (Elle Fanning), as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within."
Angelina Jolie, of course, returns to play the title character, while viewers will also be happy to see Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville back in their old roles. In addition, Harris Dickinson, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Skrein, and Chiwetel Ejiofor will be joining the cast this time around.
The long-awaited movie is set to be released on October 18. We'll be quaking in fear and excitement until then!
