It's been two whole years since the last X-Men film was released and, needless to say, fans of the American superhero franchise are getting thirsty.

Luckily for them, the trailer for X-Men: Dark Phoenix dropped today, and it looks absolutely insane. Directed by Simon Kinberg, the twelfth instalment of the series marks the beginning of a new trilogy in which the X-Men must face the full power of the Phoenix after a mission to space goes wrong and Jean Gray (Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner) merges with the cosmic power.

"With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy," the synopsis for the new film reads.

The new snippet appears to reveal a few spoilers for the film, including that Jessica Chastain plays a villain named Smith, the Beast is on Team Magneto and, most importantly of all, someone dies. It all sounds pretty intense to us! Without further ado, watch and enjoy:

After the film trailer was released, many fans online gave their approval. A Twitter user going by the name of @AmazingElena30 was particularly impressed, writing: "The X-Men Dark Phoenix trailer has taken my breath."

She was joined by @HestonRoberts, who commented saying: "Amid ALL the problems I’ve heard amid production, that X-Men: Dark Phoenix trailer was pretty damn good!!!"

In addition, a user named @WTFisHalonCon claimed the trailer had made him care about the X-Men franchise again."The new X-Men Dark Phoenix trailer has made me want to see an X-Men movie again. I haven't cared since I was disappointed with X3," he wrote.

Just before it was released, Simon Kinberg, who’s directing the film, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about how he had to be the one to direct it.

"[The film] was so clear in my head, emotionally and visually, that it would have killed me to hand this to somebody else to direct. I co-wrote X-Men 3, the ‘Dark Phoenix’ story, which is probably the most sacred of the X-Men storylines in the comics," he said.

Speaking to Digital Spy, the 45-year-old British-born American screenwriter also explained how X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be different from previous movies in the franchise, stating "this movie is kind of a lot more emotion-based, much more grounded".

"This one is really character-driven – a really emotional story about a girl battling with a deadly mix of mental health problems and being a superhero," he said. "It’s such a departure from the last movie. So it’s all wrapped up into one, and it’s a movie about struggle and abandonment and not knowing yourself. Yeah, an internal struggling. It’s so, so interesting."

X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be released in the US on February 14, 2019. We don't know about you, but we can't wait.
