Evanna Lynch - who is perhaps best known for playing Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter movie franchise - has stunned fans with her new role.

The Irish actress, now 30 (and now I feel old), surprised viewers watching last night's episode of Silent Witness.

The September 6 episode, titled 'Redemption', marked the first installment of the show's 24th season, which follows a team of UK forensic pathology experts as they solve a series of brutal crimes.

But it wasn't the return of the BBC crime drama that had people talking, but one of the episode's leading stars: Evanna Lynch.

Lynch made her film debut all the way back in 2007 when she was cast as the cooky Hogwarts student Luna Lovegood in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. She would return for the role in the subsequent movies, up until 2011's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2.

Since then, the actor has only been on our screens in a handful of acting roles, but did come in third place on the 27th season of Dancing with the Stars.

In last night's episode of Silent Witness, Lynch starred as Paisley Robinson, who was visiting her inmate boyfriend Scott Weston (played by Elliott Tittensor). During her scenes, she advocates for his case to be reviewed.

Needless to say, seeing little Luna Lovegood in such a gritty show left viewers shook - and people quickly took to social media to share their thoughts.

"Seeing Luna Lovegood as a baddie in #SilentWitness has broken me," tweeted one viewer.

A second added: "Is anyone else still trying to process Luna Lovegood [...] its proper knocked me #SilentWitness".

A third typed: "Is that Luna Lovegood having a thing with a psychotic prisoner? #SilentWitness."

"Luna Lovegood is in Silent Witness on @BBCOne Those Nargles better watch out! #SilentWitness #HarryPotter #BBC," tweeted a fourth.

Speaking to Cosmopolitan back in 2017, Lynch revealed how she felt "stuck" as her 18-year-old self after spending seven years discussing her role in the wizarding movie franchise.

"I'm different now and need to honor that and challenge myself to create something else, something from the person I am today," she said.

That being said, during her appearance on Dancing With The Stars, Lynch did credit J.K. Rowling with helping her during her battle with an eating disorder as a child. Lynch said: "Her books and her kindness really made me want to live again."

"Anyone who's had an eating disorder knows it completely takes over your life," she said, before adding that she would write to and receive letter from Rowling - leading to them becoming "pen friends "pen friends".
