Hayden Christensen is set to reprise his role as Darth Vader in the new Disney+ Star Wars spinoff series, President of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy announced at the Disney Investors Day.

Ewan McGregor described Christensen's return as "The most beautiful thing of all," Deadline reports.

Announcing the news, the official Star Wars account wrote on Twitter: "Hayden Christensen returns as Darth Vader, joining Ewan McGregor in OBI-WAN KENOBI. The Original Series begins 10 years after the dramatic events of Revenge of the Sith, and is coming to #DisneyPlus."

Alongside the announcement of Christensen's return, it was revealed that the new spinoff series will take place ten years after the 2005 movie The Revenge of the Sith.

As per the Daily Mail, Kennedy said the show "begins 10 years after the dramatic events of Revenge of the Sith, where he faced his greatest defeat, the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker turned evil Sith Lord Darth Vader."

She then teased that Anakin could be pitted against his former teacher Obi-Wan in what she described as "the rematch of the century."

Revenge of the Sith saw Anakin transform into sith lord Darth Vader, and the character's ascent into a villain has been well documented in Star Wars comics as well as in Rogue One.

Variety reports that other actors appearing in the spinoff include Genevieve O'Reilly (who will play 'Star Wars' legacy character Mon Mothma), Stellan Skarsgard, Kyle Soller, Denise Gough, and Adria Arjona.

The news comes after the news outlet revealed earlier this year that writer Joby Harold will be scripting the series after Hossein Amini left the project in January.

Harold's previous writing credits include Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead film, WGN America drama series Underground, and the Netflix series “Spinning Out.”

However, the series was not the only Star Wars news of note mentioned at the conference.

Variety reports that the 'Andor' spinoff starring Diego Luna as Cassian Andor from Rogue One was also announced, as well as an Ashoka Tano spinoff and a Rangers of the New Republic series - both of which will come from The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni - a longtime Star Wars creator and executive producer.

The series is set to begin filming in 2021, Kennedy announced.
