Hilary Duff has issued the news that fans of Lizzie McGuire were not wanting to hear: the show's much-anticipated reboot has officially been canceled.
This comes after fans of the show had their dreams come true when the reboot was announced in December of 2018.

Filming for the reboot began in October of 2019, and Disney released photographs from the set to whet the appetites of the next generation of fans to give them an insight into what adult Lizzie's life looks like.

Fans were given even more news to be excited about when Hilary took to Instagram to reveal that the entire original cast would be returning for the reboot.

However, things took a turn for the worst last year when Hilary's relationship with Disney went sour, and the reboot's showrunner, Terri Minsky, was fired from the series.

"Fans have a sentimental attachment to Lizzie McGuire and high expectations for a new series," Disney wrote in a statement to Variety, explaining Terri's departure. "After filming two episodes, we concluded that we need to move in a different creative direction and are putting a new lens on the show."
While this different creative direction wasn't specified, it soon emerged that the show following Lizzie's adult life was thought to be too racy for Disney.
Hilary posted a statement to her Instagram account in February saying that she would be "doing a disservice to everyone by limiting the realities of a 30-year-old's journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating," and wanted Disney to move the show to Hulu.

Now, Hilary has once again taken to Instagram to reveal that it's over.
She said that she wanted any reboot of the classic Disney show to be "honest and authentic".
"I want any reboot of Lizzie to be honest and authentic to who Lizzie is today. It's what the character deserves. We can all take a moment to mourn the amazing woman she would have been and the adventures we would have taken with her."

"I know the efforts and conversations have been everywhere trying to make a reboot work but, sadly & despite everyone's best efforts, it isn't going to happen," Hilary revealed.
"I'm very sad, but I promise everyone tried their best and the stars just didn't align," she added.
She then concluded her statement with a fitting Lizzie McGuire joke, writing: "Hey now, this is what 2020s are made of."
