The original movie starred Joey King, Jacob Elordi, Joel Courtney, and Molly Ringwald, and saw blooming teenager Elle (King) put her friendship with Lee (Courtney) at risk when she sparks up a romance with his older brother and notorious bad boy, Noah (Elordi).
The movie was a huge success for the streaming platform, becoming the most re-watched movie of 2018 - so it is only natural they would want to capitalize on its popularity.
And the movie even sparked a real-life romance between stars King and Elordi, as the pair started dating after meeting on-set - but broke up back in 2018.
But this wasn't going to King from giving the fans a sequel. Speaking on the podcast, Mood with Lauren Elizabeth, King spoke about what it was like to once again work in an on-screen relationship with her ex.
Being careful not to mention any names (talk about beating around the bush), King said: "I know what everyone wants to know, of course. And yeah, it was crazy.
"It was a wild experience, but honestly, it was a really beautiful time because I learned a lot about myself and I grew as an actor, I grew as a person."
King then addressed what it meant to make a highly-anticipated sequel, saying:
"I’m a fan of how it resonated with the world, it resonated with me, so going back and doing that and making the sacrifice of what, obviously, everyone is thinking about and what I’m not outwardly addressing, but what I’m kind of on the sly addressing, making those sacrifices was totally worth it."
So, what can we expect from the sequel? Well, judging by the trailer, it looks like a new love interest may just throw a spanner in the works for Elle, Noah, and Lee.
The official Netflix synopsis reads: "Elle just had the most romantic summer of her life with her reformed bad-boy boyfriend Noah Flynn (Jacob Elordi).
"But now Noah is off to Harvard, and Elle heads back to high school for her senior year.
"She'll have to juggle a long-distance relationship, getting into her dream college with her best friend Lee (Joel Courtney), and the complications brought on by a close friendship with a handsome, charismatic new classmate named Marco (Taylor Zakhar Perez).
"When Noah grows close to a seemingly-perfect college girl (Maisie Richardson-Sellers), Elle will have to decide how much she trusts him and to whom her heart truly belongs."
The Kissing Booth 2 will land on the streaming platform on July 24.
