Netflix viewers are urging the streaming platform to include a trigger warning for its latest dark offering, Fair Play. Check out the intense trailer below:
(Before we move on, this is a spoiler-free article, so don't worry if you haven't yet seen the movie.)
The movie - written and directed by Chloe Domont in her feature directorial debut - stars Phoebe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich as a couple of young and madly in love financial analysts, whose relationship is thrown into turmoil when one is promoted over the other.
A short synopsis for the movie reads: "An unexpected promotion at a cutthroat hedge fund pushes a couple's romance to the brink, threatening to unravel far more than their recent engagement."
And it certainly is proving to be a popular choice among Netflix users; as of this writing, the movie is currently listed as number 1 in the UK on the platform.
The movie is listed as an 18 for UK fans, and comes with a warning of "sexual violence", and has been described by many outlets as an "erotic thriller". However, the movie is far from a sexy movie, and instead focuses on the power struggle between the sexes, as it holds a mirror up to the societal systemic problem of masculinity and stereotypical gender roles.
But after some viewers watched the movie, they took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to call on Netflix to add a trigger warning.
"Not sure who recommended I watch Fair Play on Netflix, it was so triggering to watch. There should have been a trigger warning or something," one X user wrote. A second agreed, writing: "Fair Play on Netflix really upset me. It needs a trigger warning and secondly, the ending was a waste of my time."
"This movie should have a trigger warning for people who have been in narcissistic relationships. It shows us when to leave , how we have so many chances to do so and still we don't," a third added.
And a fourth directly called out the streaming platform, writing: "TW [trigger warning] tho for DV [domestic violence] on Fair Play ... actually @netflix you need to add a very clear warning for this."
Despite the concern of some viewers, others believe the movie was essential viewing, with one X user writing: "Sometimes, watching a movie provides so much clarity that you didn’t know you needed.
"See how much clarity I got In less than two hours. Every woman needs to watch Fair Play on Netflix".
Nevertheless, the concerns of many have been addressed by the movie's director in an interview with Harper's Bazaar.
"I always knew that the film could be very triggering for women, but coming out of recent screenings, I’ve seen that it’s actually also very triggering for men," Domont told the outlet. "It’s gotten people asking a lot of questions, which I think is really exciting, [and] that’s the best thing I could hope for. More than this being a film about female empowerment, this is really a film about male fragility."
Fair Play currently holds an impressive 87% on Rotten Tomatoes - so maybe that's enough to have you tuning in tonight?
