Netflix viewers have been left in tears after watching a new heartbreaking series on the streaming platform.

Set in Santa Cruz, Mexico, The Accident tells the story of a well-to-do couple Daniela (played by Ana Claudia Talancón) and Emiliano (played by Sebastián Martínez), who throw a birthday party for their son, Rodrigo.

They invite a bunch of other kids and parents to the occasion and everything seems to be going smoothly until suddenly things take a tragic turn as the weather changes.

The wind suddenly picks up and the bouncy castle that the family had at the event blows away with three children inside, leading to their deaths.

As the community deals with the aftermath of the tragedy wondering who is really at fault for the accident, more hidden truths start to be uncovered.

The 10-part series is written by Leonardo Padrón and brought to life on the screen by both Klych López and Gracia Querejeta. Alongside Talancón and Martínez, the Spanish show also stars the likes of Alberto Guerra, Eréndira Ibarra, Shaní Lozano and Silverio Palacios.

Netflix fans have been left hooked on the series, with many taking to social media to praise it for its storytelling techniques.

"'The Accident' on Netflix 100/10," wrote one user, while another added that it was the "saddest s*** I’ve ever seen and this is why I don’t watch new shows the way my anxiety is set up absolutely not."

A third also stated: "The Accident on Netflix is a mega energy syphon. I was crying two episodes in. Captivating, but the emotional energy release is almost impossible to resist. The whole premise is all the children in the community go missing. The parents crying in the kids bedrooms sent me."

While fans seemingly enjoyed the series, some critics thought that it was a little too dramatic to be believable.

Joel Keller from Decider urged fans to "skip it" while reviewing The Accident for the publication's iconic 'Stream It Or Skip It' series.

"The Accident takes too many big swings in the first episode without taking any time to let us live with its characters," Keller writes after watching the first episode. "It’s also very eye-rollingly melodramatic through most of the first episode."

Pramit Chatterjee also described it as "one of the worst shows of the year" stating that he thinks it will get renewed due to people's need to watch a "poorly-made series" as background noise while they complete chores.

"If it somehow ends up getting axed, my dwindling faith in the people who consume entertainment will be somewhat restored," he added. "If it’s not clear already, here’s me explicitly telling everyone that I don’t recommend giving The Accident a watch."

The Accident is available to stream on Netflix now.
