Now that the coronavirus has driven millions of people around the world into quarantine, one of the best ways to keep yourself amused while cooped up indoors is by watching movies. And luckily, this week a disturbing new horror film has dropped on Netflix, which has been terrifying viewers at home.

Take a look at the disturbing trailer for the movie in the video below:

The Platform, directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, is a Spanish movie set inside a sinister dystopian prison complex (the eponymous platform) with a chilling social Darwinist twist.

The Platform itself is composed of hundreds of stories of floors, each containing a cell for two prisoners. Each day, a platform laden with a veritable banquet of food is lowered from the top floor all the way down to the bottom. The prisoners have ten minutes to eat as much food as they can (and are unable to keep any food on their person for later) before the platform is lowered.

Each month, the prisoners are put to sleep and randomly moved to a different floor. This is where the horror, and the satire of capitalism, comes into play. The prisoners at the top floor routinely gorge themselves, while those on the bottom are left to pick through the leftovers. As starvation sets in, the prisoners are forced to resort to more and more brutal methods to ensure their survival.

On Twitter, a number of social media users have praised the film's unflinching portrayal of social inequality.

For instance, one Twitter user wrote: "#ThePlatform on Netflix is a stunning film on class inequality and the horrors of food shortage that could turn humans into zombies. ‘The Platform’ predicts the end of humanity when nothing actually matters if you have no balanced solidarity. It’s a post-apocalyptic masterpiece. [sic]"

This is a must-watch during self-isolation!
